Dollar is significantly cheaper than others at SFO... any input on the inconvenience of being offsite would be greatly appreciated. If it is consistenly an additional hour and major hassle, the extra money might not be worth it...

Thank you!

In the absence of other comments, here's my completely uninformed take:

Don't know about SFO in particular, but in my experience using rental cars at LAX (where everybody is offsite), buses come around about every 5-10 minutes and the drive is about 10 minutes. I would assume SFO is fairly similar.

One thing about SFO's on-site rental facilities is that you have to ride that tram all the way to the end to get to the rental facility. I don't know if Dollar has to pick you up out in front of that or if they can pick you up from baggage claim curbside. If they can do the latter, Dollar may actually be faster than the on-site agencies. (Knowing airport administrative bureaucracies, I would bet, however, that offsite agencies are required to pick renters up from in front of the rental facility, so you would first ride the slow tram to the rental garage and then wait for the Dollar bus.)

(Airport automated driverless trams are always super slow...I've never understood why automated trains can't go faster. Maybe it's an FRA regulation or something...)

As always, I'm sure someone will be along here shortly to correct my ignorance...

Dollar is in the terminal at SFO just like all the other rental car companies. Not sure why it's the cheapest but I used to get a rental car for $11 a day from them 2 years ago. Go for it ^
