I’m going to miss the Bikini Bull Riding. Gilley’s was about the only reason to get anywhere near the Frontier.

Mrs K. and I would go to the New Frontier to play Bingo - the last one on the Strip - and play the Sigma Derby.

I'm so impressed you like Sigma Derby too! I'm thinking that MGM Grand bought the New Frontier's machine for parts: both parts and people who know how to fix them are difficult to find, these days....the machines are notoriously fickle!

I remember reading that someone bought the bull from Gilley's as well so there will be another place to ride! I'll just have to try to remember where??? Or maybe someone else here will know.

(Spring/early summer is a possibility for our next LAS fun - better than winter for us and I know no better guides to fun than the kaukaus :D).

Food week in late summer is very tempting, though.
If there's little of the 'old strip' left then we'll make sure we also visit Fremont St for the 'old vegas' instead. :) Hopefully we can swing a Do or come to one with the gang.

let us NOT forget Circus Circus, which, IMO, is in a class by itself; and The Sahara ain't exactly a palace :D Though, I give The Riviera a bit of a pass card --- due to its history.

edit to add : though, I've always found the history of Circus Circus to be pretty neat; especially since it was built as a "lux" casino (with NO hotel) by Sarno (aka Mr. Caesars Palace...)

Casino Royale is mostly awful Blackjack Switch and Crapless Craps games, though. Circus Circus is really the only dive left on the Strip, especially now that Boardwalk is gone.

Actually, it is common knowledge (though, I don't play there) that Casino Royale has the best standard craps game on the strip (if NOT all of Vegas). Regular dice game with 100x odds (IIRC, it is a $5 game, but I think it used to be a $3 minimum).

They "might" also have a crapless craps game, but you can easily avoid it; and just play their regular dice game.

With regard to Blackjack Switch, you have to play the proper strategy (i.e. NOT regular Blackjack Basic Strategy). Per the Wizard of Odds, under Las Vegas rules the house edge is 0.18% with eight decks and 0.16% with six decks. I wouldn't consider that awful, you just have to know how to play the game properly. ;)

On a Thursday evening a couple weeks ago, it was still $3 min. For bets less than $5, it was 20x, and 100x for $5 and up.

Has anyone seen anything definitive on the date of the implosion? I noticed a couple of sites (LA Advisor, LA Blogspot) all said it was "rumored" to be in the wee hours of November 13th, but I can't find anything that actually states when the date of implosion is. If anyone knows for sure, I'd appreciate knowing, Mrs Pup has an interest in it.

I don't believe there will be an official announcement. They tend to try to keep it quiet to keep the number of spectators low. The 13th has been the date rumored for several weeks but could be changed at the last minute. Keep watching the LV news sites.

We'll be there for it - if it goes down Nov. 11 - 15; and would like to spectate; but not so sure it's that good an idea, as many eyewitnesses to past implosions have said "Never again", due to the dust, pollutants, dangers etc. Perhaps best to watch the video.

yeah, I know what you mean. Though, I did read an interesting trip report (very recently) where someone had a pretty nice stay @ Circus as RFB in a suite. Not sure I would ever want to be considered a Circus Circus VIP (lol).

Sarno's original vision of Circus Circus was pretty interesting. While I am not sure of all the details there were a number of interesting elements of the original casino. Some of these were discontinued since they were problematic. While it was supposed to be a "family oriented" casino property, Sarno still viewed it as a luxurious gambling environment.

IIRC,
- you originally entered Circus via a slide (that's right) a slide
- the circus acts were directly visible and above the casino floor
- they had an elephant (Tanya ?) who would roam the casino floor and was trained to play slot machines. I also think the elephant played keno.

I really wish I could see a photo of what the original Baccarat room looked like at Circus. Rumor has it, that Bennett (et al) took an axe to the Baccarat tables as a symbolic gesture when they decided to re-make Circus Circus as a "blue collar" "working man's" casino property. At the same time they also pulled the credit lines of their big players and discontinued most complimentaries, IIRC.

How about TI? You'd need to specify a room facing north, and you'd want to be high enough to look over Fashion Show Mall.

A high enough room at Venetian, oriented properly, might also do the trick.

Also, Palace Station may have rooms high enough and oriented to the southeast for a view. Probably within your price range.

The Wynn room rates are too steep for me too. Especially when there will be no guarantee of a view or even that the implosion will take place on any announced date. I have been looking at google maps satellite view and it does not look like the Wynn actually faces the Frontier very well. Their parking garage would be a great view but I would expect it might be tarped off to protect cars.

This link (if I saved it correctly) should take you to the satellite view of the Wynn. If not put in 3131 S. Las Vegas Boulevard and you can find it.

Another possibility could be a higher floor of the North tower at the Las Vegas Hilton. Even the TI rooms do not seem to face the Frontier well. Does anyone know if there are windows at the ends of the hallways??

I was there for the Stardust implosion and the only thing that got tarped off was the Mc donalds:D:D. I watched from the front street as the strip was closed down. I came out of it clean but the people watching from the Circus Circus parking garage looked like they had been in a mine cave in :D:D:D. So where ever you watch it from make sure the wind is blowing the other way@:-)

I didn't feel like watching it on TV.

We watched it live n TV at 2:30 in the morning at the International Beer Bar at the Golden Nugget with friends. Lots of fun. Some security personnel went up to the roof of the Nugget to watch: they said the fireworks were visible, but the implosion was was mostly blocked by Circus Circus. The Wynn is going to need a good hosing down, that's for sure!

i was watching wfaa 12 noon news and they show a clip of a dark shadow (like a person) sneaking into the building just right b4 the implosion.
