The Atlanta Hotel, a rather exotic spot in BKK not too far from the JW Marriott (Atlanta is either a hippy haven or a charming refuge from BKK stress, depending on your view) provides a guide to BKK written by the proprietor.

Among the points in the book, NEVER buy jewelery in BKK if you do not have a very good long time friend from a very good Thai family who will personally take you to a place where his family goes. If you do ANY thing else, you will be cheated.

Don't know about the jewelery, but the book does have lots of good advice.

Personally, I prefer to buy rather cheap stuff in the Weekend Market. Then I don't have to worry about the ripoffs.

I was going to post about Lin Jewelers too. The Lin family has at least half a dozen seeming separate (save for the common name) stores in the soi sometimes known as Soi Oriental. I've purchased quite a few items from them in the last year or so. Haven't yet had a problem with quality or feeling overcharged. They drive a hard bargain, though, so you need to drive a hard bargain back. The results can be very good.

That said, I'm only talking about buying silvercraft and such from Lin. Not gold or pearls or stones. The Lin family works mostly in silver. Jewelers that focus on gold are more typically found in and around Chinatown, and a lot of pearl shops are around Khao San Road, of all places. Can't recommend anyplace in particular for gold or pearls, and I wouldn't even think about buying gems in Bangkok.

I have a personal relationship with this family; they own two stores:
ABC Jewelry in Central World Plaza and
Trez Jewelry in Siam Paragon.

Their quality is high and prices good considering the quality level. Our colleagues have been very happy with their purchases. I recommend them highly.

They have a good reputation and have had several US Presidents buy jewelry there.

IMHO, no US Presidents have ever bought any jewelry in Bangkok. They may have been given some by the Thai government.

They don't have to worry about being cheated. But, you do (darn it). @:-)

Their pictures are autographed in the shop, so they probably have at least been there. Many other high ranking officials have also been there.

the above applies largely to jewellery that contains gemstones, such as rubies.

for plain gold jewellery, things are much simpler.

the big, air-conditioned chinese gold shops in yaowarat (the bigger, the better) are an excellent place to buy good value 23-carat gold jewellery sold by weight, with a small labour charge added. this is the kind that is traditionally bought by thai people as a store of value and u are not likely to be cheated, as such jewellery is extremely easy to value. each gold shop posts the buying and selling price of gold in the window, so u can compare prices. the disadvantage of such jewellery is that it is physically very soft.

the link below might be of help in ur research. it also has a picture of a typical gold shop counter.
