For some reason I never get the ZE1 point automatically added to the account despite always renting as a gold service. I always have to request retroactive credit. Do you know what I need to do to make the points accrual automatic?

For each rental, are you clicking the #1 Awards points option on the confirmation screen? (Near where you'd otherwise enter or select an FF account.)

If so, are you on some sort of odd contract rate that doesn't allow ZE1 points? (Meaning Hertz is just being nice or not noticing when they retroactively give them to you.)

Call the 800 number and ask to have ZE1 set permanent on your number. I think you have to call during daytime hours to get the #1 desk to handle this request. I had this done since my work's TA website only has choices for airline points on car rentals. :td:

I have ZE1 on my profile. I have about 70 rentals this year, and would say that 33-36 have NOT posted. This is frustrating.

I now just ask for an "audit" every 3rd month or so..and it picks up the points. ZE1's are becoming worthless though...I would look into AVIS.

Au contraire... ZE1's are actually quite valuable - having to request an audit sucks, but definitely DO it - don't leave those points behind!! It's not too hard to get 15 cents per point in value (conservatively) - for most rentals, that beats anything else out there.

If you do frequent short rentals, it could be worthwhile to consider other programs, since the second way to earn free days - your rental counter - is much faster with National. (I don't know about Avis.) For me, the mix of ZE1 on long rentals, WN credits on short rentals, and the bonus free day after 15 rentals is the best mix.

One upside to National is that the Free Days seem to work for any car. Two weeks ago, I used my 2 accumulated National days for a luxury car at LGA that had a "rack rate" of $146.99/day. (I'm not sure what I could have really gotten it for had I tried.) I used 2 Hertz free days at LGA as well, but was capped at a Premium car. (Both agencies' free days left a true $0 bill - no taxes or fees.)

Even the coming jump to 600 points per day (from 500) still leaves the ZE1 points very attractive.

Trust me, you don't want to look into Avis... I just switched back, due to corporate re-signing with Hertz, and I can't tell you how glad I am :D Avis' customer service, as well as car quality, as deteriorated of late. Their new slogan is "We try (unsuccessfully)" I believe.

My brand perception of Avis can be summed up in one word: Buick. Seriously, whenever I think of Avis, I envision a vast lot full of Buicks and other GM's. Whenever I see a coworker in an Avis car, it's a Buick.

I don't know if my perception is accurate for 2007 or not. My perception of Hertz, years ago, used to be summed up in one word: Taurus. I think Hertz has successfully shaken that - both with their advertising and the actual cars on the lot.
