JetBlue TrueBlue - Why is Jet Blue giving away so many points?

This worries me a little.

Why is Jet Blue giving away so many points?

You got 50 POINT sign up bonus with a new Jet Blue AMEX.

There's a 20 POINT unlimited bonus for flying before mid October using AMEX.

I just got a Jet Blue Amex brochure with a complimentary 10 POINT bonus for using it.

There was that recent PIT based free flight bonus for booking a round trip.

I'd like to think that the company is not going to go belly up anytime soon. I would certainly hate to think that all those awards I've saved up so far would lose their value in the near future as I'd love to cash in for a vacation the whole family can enjoy, hopefully some place exotic!

Discuss.

I have two ideas that might answer it, but its just my idea as to why jetBlue/AMEX is going crazy with points. Maybe not that many people use the jetBlue AMEX and AMEX want to drive up the numbers? Plus September and October tends to be slower months for most airlines and it make sense for jetBlue and AMEX to come up with this promotion.

who cares as to why? Just enjoy the promo --its slow season and they are trying to get butts in seats vs. empty seats. Look at the stats as to how many award tickets are actually used etc, youd be surprised.

Its like rebates. People buy products b/c they like the final price after the rebate but only 20% or so of people actually do mail them in to collect on it.

I'm not saying that only 20% +/- of the people who get the reward travel from JetBlue will use it, but I can gaurentee that not everyone will.

One word: Marketing.

JetBlue is FAR from going "belly up"...look at their recent improved numbers. As mentioned above, it's the slow time of year for airlines (in between summer and Christmas with the exception of Thanksgiving) and it's nothing more than promotions.

On a side note, what's that 10-point AmEx brochure you're talking about??

I sure hope so!

Keep checking your mail for the brochure, if I got one I'm sure you'll get one too!

You got 50 POINT sign up bonus with a new Jet Blue AMEX.

50 points isn't so much for a new credit card customer. B6 is giving away half a trip. Many other airlines give away at least 10-15k miles which is generally a half trip for them also.

If they wanted to give the farm away it would be more than 50 points.

compared to this time last year they're a lot more generous

both to new and existing AMEX cardholders

American is also giving away a bunch of rewards, as in 25,000 miles:

"Fly two round trips. Get one on us. Free*"

The terms seem similar to JetBlue's. I bet the airlines are just planning ahead for the early fall slowdown prior the holiday rush.

What brochure is this? I'm not living at the address on my account - should I tell the family to look out for something?

Yes, definitely. Same situation here...I did not see it for myself, but just got off the phone with my dad who has it there. 10 points for just using your card at least once during September! AMAZING! ^

Ah, sweet :) Any need to sign up for this, or will it be credited automatically?

From what I understand, no. You'll receive the points within 8-12 weeks after 9/30 as long as you use your card at least one time this month. I will be home again on Friday and will post the details when I see the actual piece.

to be honest the award dollars showed up in the account a day or two after the brochure arrived... so technically the sole purpose of the mailing is to explain the 2000 extra award dollars in your AMEX account and eventually the 10 extra points in your true blue account, which already transferred for me.

thank you Jet Blue!
