I've been playing the waiting game on this route for a while now. I'll need two one-way seats on Dec 22. However it occurs to me that there may not be a seat sale on this date. Current lowest fares on westjet.com are CAD$376/person plus taxes.

Anyone got any thoughts on if I should wait for a seat sale (right now the Westjet tool shows sales for travel only to Dec 15).

Or am I looking at a fare that isn't likely to get significantyly lower? Does anyone have any historcal data that shows a trend - I tried farecast.com but they don't cover the cities I want.

It has been my experience that sometime in October, WS adds extra domestic segments for the holidays, you can usually tell them apart because they'll have crazy flight numbers like 4017 or something like that...

These segments tend not to be predictable, but are added where aircraft are available.

You MAY get lucky and find a YYZ-YVR flight during this period.

And of course, being a newly added flight, they do sell lower fare seats.

I've flown to YWG this way at least twice over the past 3 years.

But again, very unpredictable.

Dodgy's right. You can wait a bit and hope that an extra flight is added but that's not guaranteed. I do recall there being one night where we had two red-eye YVR-YYZ flights and another day where there was an added YYZ-YVR but that's it.

Thanks to you both, I guess what I'm asking is if you think that the fare is likely to drop much lower. I know we could all be rich if we could answer that - just looking for you guy feelings here.... :)

I have been watching YYZ-YVR for the last 6 years. Yes, normally sometime in late Oct or early Nov they will load a few discount seats on the few days before Christmas. However, everyone will be checking and they're normally gone within 24 hours.

Unless you want to be checking every day from now to mid-November, I'd buy now.

Buy them now. They will not offer a seat sale for flights on Dec 22, which will be one of the busiest travel days of the year. You might save a few dollars when they add extra flights, if you catch them fast enough, but it's more likely that you will end up having to buy more expensive seats if you wait.

If you are flexible and can fly on Dec 24th or 25th, you might be able to save a few dollars if you wait.
