I was wondering how passengers would be routed at SFO as Jet Blue arrives in the International Terminal. How does the SFO operations make it so that passengers arriving from JFK don't go through customs? Do the passengers from JetBlue arrive at the same place as overseas passengers?

If a Domestic Passenger went through security how could they exit the secured area and re-enter? From what I saw at the SFO international terminal there was no way to exit the terminal once you cleared security.

Another question say you were arriving on Jet Blue and connecting to another overseas flight in the same area do you have to leave the area to go to the check-in counters to check your passport info even if you don't need your bags to be checked. Can this be done post security?

Thanks for the answers. I know Virgin America arrives in the International Terminal as well.

I would assume it would like NW or CO out of JFK, never went thru the route that those coming in from an Intl flight had to. And there is a different Baggage Claim area too for the Dom flights

No airports in the US operate with "secure" transfer areas for International flights, which means that all International terminals are really just regular terminals that have the ability to route arriving passengers to immigration/customs in addition to normal arrivals. That's not to say that the airports weren't designed that way - many of them were - but the US government won't let people just transit our country, so the airports can't operate that way.

What this means to you is that arrivals to the International terminal are just normal arrivals, and you spill out in to the terminal when you deplane. Baggage claim is available, too. And there should be no problem leaving the secured area and re-entering it as many times as you want.

As for the re-check process, I don't know if any carriers have service desks inside the terminal. You might be able to manage it if there is a lounge for your onward carrier, as they should be able to check you in for a flight in the lounge, but they might look at you funny and question how you managed to get there without checking in.

There is a door off to the side of security check point where you can leave the secure area.

As for customs, its a really really easy answer. The gates, like at most terminals across the country with both domestic and international flights, have 2 doors once you deplane. 1 door goes into the waiting area and you can exit the terminal with out having to go through customs. The other door often time leads to a lower level floor that leads to customs. So on jetBlue and Virgin America, you exit into the main terminal area where you board the plane. If you flew in from another country, you would end up on the lower level of the terminal and heading towards customs. This actually allow SFO and other airports to use the gate for both international and domestic arrivals.
