Hertz - Oneway rental SLC - LAX 24 days - help needed

Hi,

For next summer I will need two cars for my family and friends for

SLC - LAX

We will go from SLC to Jackson Hole then drive south to Scottsdale, AZ from there before heading to LAX.
Theoretically, we could make a round trip LAX - LAX, but that's only the last option.

July 9 - August 2, 2008.
I looked up all as one rental and the rate came to USD 2690 (using AAA code) for a Ford Expedition (we need a large SUV, Audi Q7 or Escalade preferred, Expedition may be bit too large).

two separate bookings SLC-PHX for the first 10 days and then two weeks PHX-LAX rental gives no results as supposedly all the good cars are sold out in PHX July 19, 2008 (which I strongly doubt).

What are the best options / rental combinations in your opinion?

Thanks a lot!

Try pricing it as two rentals -- one SLC back to SLC and another SLC to LAX. That isn't going to save a HUGE amout, but SLC is on the way from Jackson Hole to Scottsdale so that might be one way to cut down the price.

I'd also suggest looking at a minivan if you think you could fit, that would also lower the price.

Finally, consider other vendors besides Hertz. For long one-way rentals, it might be cheaper.

Hi noah,

Thanks, the SLC to SLC suggestion is good as we will indeed pass through twice - at least we would get double points.
We need two large SUVs / minivans as we are 7pax plus luggage plus golfbags...

For 7 passengers plus luggage plus golf bags, I'd look into renting a 15-passenger van. This would hold all of you and your stuff, and in the end have the lowest gas cost.

Hertz does rent them in certain cities, but I know Budget and National also rent them.

You should also look into the cost of 2 full size cars; might be cheaper for the one-way rentals. I'm not even sure the Escalade will hold 7 people + golf bags + luggage.

To clarify,
we are going to rent two Escalades or Audi Q7 cars for sure.
There is no way all the stuff fits into one vehicle and we don't want such a big van.
