What is it with the sopping wet carpets in the jetways at ICN?

The first few times I arrived there, I chalked it up to leaks due to heavy rain. But then I noticed that is in every jetway I used, regardless of gate, airline, time of day/year, position of moon and stars, etc.

Last week on my return to USA, during a long line up for the pre-board bag search, () a few other pax and I started discussing it.

I have now concluded that it is some form of disinfection for arriving pax shoes. Reason: the main floor carpeting was quite dry, only the top "rugs" leading directly into the terminal area were soaking wet. (And I mean they actually squished under your feet when you stepped on them.)

Suggestion: don't ever wear open shoes when transiting ICN.

Yes, it's a dinfectant for shoes to prevent soil-borne pests and diseases from coming into the country. The first carper is sopping wet, the second one is designed to absorb the excess solvent carried on your shoes from the first, then it's back to normal dry carpet.

No leaky roof at Incheon. The leaky roof is at Suvarnabhumi. ;)
