I'm going to be traveling for the next few months and just started with starwood preferred.

If I do 3 separate reservations instead of 1 reservation for 3 nights, will that count as 3 stays or do they protect against that?

I have never tried that, but I have (due to unexpected business developments) checked out and back in for several days in a row more than once. Each night was counted as a separate stay (and I would argue that it should have been due to the circumstances).

However, SPG may protect against "planned" separate stays in one trip.

If you mean three different stays at three different starwood hotels over that three day period then you would be fine.
But if you mean check into the hotel - check out that morning and check back in to the same hotel that afternoon then that would not count.

You must allow 24hours from your check out time to check back into the same hotel in order for it to count as a stay.

There are several threads on this very topic (sorry, I need CheapElite to find the exact one- when I did a search I came up with over 150 of them!) :)

SPG does audit and will "prevent" you from counting 3 nights at the same hotel as 3 separate stays. Additionally, there was another issue where if you are in the same city then you can't count as 3 separate stays either although you can reach Gold with 10 NIGHTS or 10 STAYS. There is also a promo going on right now that offers some participants double night stays so if you're eligible for that you'll be 2/3 of the way to GOLD after this one trip.

Let's be clear on this....

Three (3) consecutive nights at the same hotel is technically supposed to count as 1 stay.....regardless of how it was booked (1, 2 or 3 separate reservations).

Same city?

I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly.........as 'staying' at different SPG hotels within the same city will earn more than 1 stay credit.....even if there is no 1-night 'break' between switching hotels.

I mean......it's been reported here many times about those that 'hotel hop' on a nightly basis in order to rack up stay credits.

Personally.....the primary reason I change hotels is if I need to be in a different area......such as during my recent trip to TX.....where I spent 3 nights....each at a different SPG hotel.

1st night : Westin DFW....as I arrived in the afternoon and simply wanted a place to crash for the night.....and liked my previous stay earlier this year. FYI, their mini bar rates are quite reasonable when compared to other hotels........which is partly why I actually made use of it during this stay. My only suggestion would be to increase the variety of items.

2nd night : Westin City Center.....as I needed to be in downtown Dallas for this day and I like this hotel's central location and they have a nice staff.....as this was my 3rd stay at this property within the last 2 years.

3rd night : Sheraton Arlington.....as I really wanted to catch one of the Rangers vs Mariners games.....while staying at a hotel that provides shuttle service to DFW as I had to catch a flight the next day. FWIW, I was able to get a great seat almost directly behind home plate on the lowest level (Sec 25) and watched the Rangers beat the Mariners. :)

3 nights.....3 stay credits.

I guess I should also mention that I received an upgrade to a suite at each hotel. ;)

Speaking of the Sheraton Arlington.....

I simply can't mention this relatively new addition to the Sheraton family without going into a few details of my stay. ;)

While it's still a WiP, I can't help but say that I was impressed.....

It's a recently reflagged Wyndham......in a great location.......very close to the Ranger's Ballpark in Arlington as well as other area 'attractions'.

I was treated very nicely by the staff......to the point where I started to think that quite a few SPG properties could learn a thing or two.

Example: Since the club lounge is closed on weekends, I was provided with coupons for a free appetizer and 2 free drinks (including beer and wine) in either the restaurant or the bar........as well as a coupon for the breakfast buffet.

This was a very nice gesture that no other SPG hotel ever did for me when their club lounge was closed............even counting the time when I actually booked a club level room only to find out it was closed (despite e-mailing the hotel prior to booking.....and receiving assurances that it would be open).

Unfortunately, I didn't get to use the appetizer/drink coupons before I had to leave for DFW.

I was also told that they also provide 'shuttle service' within the surrounding area.....which I can see as being a nice option to have available.

Perhaps this 'accomodating' behavior is simply Texas hospitality. ;)

Or perhaps this is simply because they're relatively new to the Starwood family....as IIRC, it only became a Sheraton about 2 months ago.

Sure.....the property needs some additional work to get it into shape.......but when it is fully renovated (was told that this is already 'in the works').....it will be even better.........and I am already thinking of returning at some point next year in order to take in another Rangers game. ;)

IIRC, I think ldsant was referring to those rare cases that when one company owns multiple SPG properties in the same city, sometimes it will consolidate mattress runs between properties into 1 single stay.

the Sheraton Arlington offered shuttle service to DFW airport? does it also offer shuttle to the Ballpark at Arlington?

Sorry but as stated above, three (or two) stays booked at the same hotel for consecutive days will only count as one stay.

But WELCOME to (posting on) FT trumpettar!

Added to the fact that William has specifically responded to that question here to the tune of... although you might get stay/night credit by staying at different properties in the same city it may/can be reversed and end up count as one ( as it is supposed to do) ... now I have never seen any instances posted here that such a reversal has occurred but....dont be surprised.:)
