Faced with a growing pilot shortage, Air Canada Jazz has launched an experimental program to hire several cockpit crew every year straight from flight school, ushering in pilots with hundreds of hours' less experience than those traditionally recruited by the airline.

Nothing unusual in this at all, there was a time when all mainstream airlines did this apart from those coming from their national Air Force.

It's normal to lend them out to air taxi etc operators for a hundred hours or so. British Airways and others did this for a long time - BA even did training right from scratch at a special flight school they ran for a long time at Hamble in Hampshire. The "1,000 hours before we consider you" is a relatively recent approach.
