Travel Technology - USB power cable not charging BB 8700

I have several gadgets, including my BB, which use the same USB cables - which is great as I can bring one cable to connect to the laptop.

The most recent - Garmin Nuvi 370 came also with an AC cable with the same end bit to be able to charge the Nuvi straight from a power socket. Very handy, and I started using it on my BB. Worked like a charm.

I recently changed handsets - to a newer BB 8700 handset. everything is obviously the same EXCEPT for some reason this handset will not charge when connected to this cable and an AC outlet. It charges just fine via USB cable to laptop...

Any ideas why it doesn't charge using the AC cable like the old handset?

All USB connections are somewhat defined by programming. If the 120 volt charger is not for that specific device it may not work as the newer device is checking for the correct make and model of charger. Not finding it, it won't accept power. Just a theory based on my past experiences.

My 8703e draws close to the maximum supported by USB when charging, 500ma. It's quite possible that your charger doesn't supply that much current.

I suspect that the Blackberry charger will do fine charging your Nuvi; it's actually rated at 750ma. Switch 'em and see what happens.

My pearl won't charge off the USB when it's ice-cold dead.

If it's low on power but working, it will.

This is an unfortunate development, but manufacturers such as Creative and Apple has deemed it fit to limit USB-charging to their proprietary chargers and computers. In doing so many current gadgets that get charged via usb will need a specific charger since it doesn't accept a charge when receiving only power on the power pins on the usb connector.

I hope comming legislation and pressure from china will correct this and mandate a mini type b connection for sync and charging.

Strange. I have gotten my 8700 to charge in this manner. Maybe try it again.

To kev's suggestion, some desktop/laptop computers will only supply a lower current (100 mA) to USB devices that don't have any kind of driver installed. If it's got a driver, it'll give it 500 mA.

My Blackjack has a slightly different problem - apparently it'll only accept USB power from a computer, and not from a cig lighter USB adapter that supplies 800 mA. It will charge off a dedicated CLA charger, though.

I have not problems charing the BB from a USB cable connected to my computer. So the computer software (although already installed) is not in issue, nor the power supplied by the USB cable form my laptop.

The problem is a cable connected to the A/C power socket. The old handset used to charge fine, the new handset does not. Nothing changed other than the handset - and it's the same model?

And yes the Nuvi charges from the A/C fine, the BB new handset does not.
