I am Hertz Gold, but continually when I travel from OZ to the US, Thrifty has better prices for any type of normal car I want. The last 12 trips, Thrifty has been at least 10-20% cheaper for a similar car.

Are there things I am missing out on at Hertz that I dont know about that make it better value?

Thanks for any input.

I haven't tried Thrifty but I've used Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, and Avis besides Hertz and have found the cars to usually be with less issue and seem to be in better shape with Hertz. Also, it seems to me the people at hertz are more customer friendly than the other rental companies I've tried.

I know with Budget I rented a car in Atlanta and it was all scratched up, smelled like smoke, and was dirty.

Ive used pretty much every company in the industry and none are on the same level as Hertz. As with most companies, Hertz does have its exceptions (Seattle, Philly) but overall, their customer service and quality of vehicles are pretty good. I also recommend National if your looking for a similar experience (maybe not quite as good as Hertz, but pretty close)...

I would say Avis comes close in service, but Hertz is clearly tops.

I will be renting an intermediate-sized car in October for 9 days in PBI.

Hertz is offering me a Toyota Corolla "or similar".

Alamo is offering me a Pontiac G6 "or similar".

In both cases, the price I was quoted includes all insurance and taxes.

Hertz wants $736.66. Alamo is asking $340.32.

I fully, 100%, agree that Hertz's service is better -- but it is not $396.34 worth of better.

Thats been my issue. Love their service, but they are sometimes twice as much for a similar car. We are getting a large 4wd for a few days to go to Pebble Beach, and Hertz was $300USD more than Thrifty for a 3 day rental.

My recent defection from Avis would suggest otherwise :D.

Same here, nothing but problems from Avis for me...

One likely problem when there's such a huge price difference is that so many people find Hertz to be the most appealing that too many cars have already been booked at Hertz for them to give a competitive price. I'm sure that's not the only possibility, particularly when booking so far in advance, but it is something I've run into in the past. The reason they don't just say sold out is because if they can get someone to take a car at the high price they can bring in a car from elsewhere and/or hope that enough people cancel to make it work out (even better if it's the cheaper reservations that cancel, of course). Cars are overbooked just like airline seats, probably more heavily given that Hertz in all cases I've seen doesn't even penalize you for not showing up.
