Travel Technology - FM transmitter to stream PC audio? Or wifi speakers?

Want to be able to stream internet radio from the laptop in one room to a simple bedside speaker in the other room. The laptop in question is an old ThinkPad T30 with one USB 1.1 port.

Do I need something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Wireless-USB-FM-Transmitter-PC-MAC-Audio-Speaker-Music_W0QQitemZ230165184041QQihZ013QQcategoryZ7495 8QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Or is there something better or simpler?

I don't need/want to stream to the main a/v stuff in the living room, just to a bedside speaker/radio in the bedroom.

(And since I don't currently have a working bedside radio, if a bedside/tabletop speaker is a better option I'd like to know that)

We have a wifi network, and the Internet Radio devices (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=642632)are still too expensive (I'm looking into, per ScottC, a Nokia 770 but in the meantime if there is something easier/cheaper....)

TIA :)

Simpler? How about a nice length of cable? FM transmitters almost always SUCK...

I agree, these FM transmitters are not great beyond 5 ft. Cable would be
best.

IF you can find a dead FM station with little noise, you might be able to
make a small FM transmitter work... but its hit or miss.

Also look at wireless speakers, should be a zillion models from under $50 to ten times that, range of 100 to 300 feet. Plug one part in the laptop's audio socket, and put the speakers where ever you want them.

Sorry, cabling isn't an option.

If you are just going to a typical bedside radio/alarm, then the FM modulator should be adequate, but I'd look for one with more than 7 channels. These things can give very respectable performance so long as they are not having to try to fight with a real FM station; even a weak station can dramatically reduce the effective range - so the more cahnnel options you have on the modulator, the better the chances of finding a channel that works well in your location.

FM modulators will usually give better performance than cheap 900MHz wireless speakers. Anything digital will cost substantially more - and if it doesn't, it probably isn't any good.

I hear that the C. Crane Wireless FM Transmitter FMT is a very good unit at a reasonable price.

This simple mod will let you increase the range of the CCrane FM Stereo transmitter. (http://www.xmfan.com/viewtopic.php?t=3257&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0&sid=3b97e47e48e25cf7c4008ba0c8c2d0dc)

Just jacking up the voltage works on some FM modulators.
