Sprint does not use SIM card - they adhere to the CDMA standard. Only GSM providers use SIM cards - ie T-Mobile and Cingular.

Have your friend buy a pre-paid card for his kids to reach him if needed.

Sprint does offer the ability to use your US number while traveling outside the country, even in countries that use GSM. I previously had a SIM that was issued to me by Sprint that I could use in any GSM unlocked phone. The rates are not very good, but people in the US can dial your number just like they normally would and the call is forwarded to the GSM phone in whatever country you are traveling in. I used this service across a lot of Europe and also in SE Asia. The normal Sprint stores cannot activate this option, it has to be requested by calling the Sprint PCS International Support Team at 888-226-7212. You can check out this link (http://www1.sprintpcs.com/explore/ueContent.jsp?scTopic=internationalRoaming) that has some more details. It is not necessary to buy a GSM phone from Sprint, all you need is an unlocked GSM phone, and a SIM that they mail you upon activation of the International Roaming service.

Hope that helps!

AAMCI is correct; Sprint's GSM card will work just fine in any handset. Have your friend call to verify it's active. Have him get a number that works internationally for when he arrives and it doesn't work. I had one of these up until two-three years ago. The rates stink and Sprint has no clue how to resolve issues with the card.
