I am looking at a Slingbox AV and notice that it doesn't have pass-through connectors like the pro or tuner version. How does one connect it to their system? Would splitters be needed to split the connection to go to the Slingbox?

I have a DirectTivo that feeds an AV receiver. The receiver feeds the television and a DVD recorder. I have another open set of composite out connectors for audio and video on the DirecTivo, but the DirecTivo only has one SVideo out that is already monopolized by the AV receiver. Can I just split the SVideo out or should I just connect through the composite connectors? Do these types of splitters exist? I would think I would have better video with the SVideo. I don't think my receiver is capable of feeding to a third source.

Or would I be better off with the Slingbox Pro that offers pass-through connections?

You'll either need splitters or a spare output on the device its connected to.

There are splitters for this, but each time you split a signal it gets a little weaker. You may be better off with the Pro...

That triggers a question I've had for a while. I know a splitter makes the signal weaker but does a pass through built into a device also weaken the signal as much, if at all?

It certainly can. I have a VCR that passes through to the TV - the TV signal is much better (particularly sound) when the VCR is turned on than off.

Of course, your other option is to find an original Slingbox, these were sold on woot for $60 a few times so they may be on Ebay. They have a tuner AND passthrough AV.

Is there anything better about the newer AV or Tuner vs the Classic Slingbox? Or is it just a matter of splitting up the features and making each one cheaper than the Classic was?

The new ones are smaller?

I've tried them all, and I've not found any differences in streaming speed or image quality. If you can, just get the old one. The only thing I didn't like about the original was the 3.5mm jack they use for the image/audio, it's a bit of a pain to get the connector to make good contact.
