I sure seem to be running into a lot of reservations that require a 24 hour cancel lately. I hope this is not a trend. I will not make a reservation with that limitation and so I am staying at different places than I want.

I was just thinking the same thing. 24 hours was the norm for some higher demand Hiltons but the last two Hamptons I booked have 24 hour cancellation deadlines. Billings, MT and College Station, TX are not exactly resort destinations nor do thay have any sort of events during the stay would warrant the longer deadline.

I have even come across several reservations at HGI that have are imposing a 2 day requirement now.

Most of the Hampton's I stay at now have the 24 hour rule. :(

72 hrs it was at Sedona or Monterey (cant remember which).
Bit rich when you ask to drop a 3 night stay to a 2 therefore freeing up space that can be sold at last minute extortionate rates and they dont wanta let you...

I've been seeing lot that were even more than the 24 hours recently.

I don't really mind them that much, my plans don't change that much, pretty much the only thing that would get me to cancel the same day would be a lower rate at a neighboring property that wasn't available when I booked.

I've noted many hotels where the "standard" rates are still 6pm but the AAA rates now require 24hrs.

I was told this is a policy set by the individual hotel and it seems mostly with the lowly levels of HI. Unless it is unavoidable I dont book them unless I am within 50 mi of the hotel.

I saw this for the first time two weeks ago with a Hampton Inn in Michigan. It wasn't a AAA rate though.

I am seeing more and more at 72 hrs. IT all depends on the city. The bigger metros have been doing this for a year now as they are almost always sold out.

I cancelled a reservation recently by phone on my arrival date and was not charged a fee even though my reservation clearly stated a 24 hour cancellation policy. This was for the AAA rate at the Hampton Inn in Roswell, NM. I can't recall whether I called the hotel directly or the 800 number.

I have called the diamond desk and they called the hotel. I assume the hotel was not full, so was willing to accomodate. That said, I still will not make these reservations when I can avoid it.
