Has anyone tried booking a flight online (on the airlines' official websites) using a debit card, specifically VISA ELECTRON? We're bound to book flights with:

AIRASIA: www.airasia.com
BANGKOK AIRWAYS: www.bangkokair.com

and maybe also
THAI AIRWAYS: www.thaiair.com

Is this OK? I currently do not own a credit card, just debit. For those who've tried it, how did it go?
Once I saw a small portion in the AirAsia site (I think they revamped it a bit?) that said they accept Credit Cards, Visa Electron and Master Synergy. However, in the booking form, the only option there is "Credit Card" and then Visa/Mastercard under it. Is it the same and still 'use-able' for debit card? Unfortunately, I cannot find their e-mail address also and there is no guarantee for a response anyhow.

As for Bangkok Air, they say they accept all Visa cards however, only the usual Visa logo (not Visa Electron logo) is on their site which leads me to think they could mean "all Visa credit cards." I've tried e-mailing them and they said the same thing (using some "off" English which is understandable but not too reliable, IMO) but just to make sure, has anyone had an experience using their debit card with them also?

For Thai Air, if you've tried it, please post here with feedback too. Thanks and I hope my card will be OK to use. My bank says it can be used for online transactions (it has a CVV code) but double-check to be sure. Hopefully someone can help.

I booked on airasia using a visa debit. It wasn't an electron though, not sure what is diff? If has 16 digit number and a 3 digi security code and is issued by visa you can more than likley book under the visa credit card option.

The site was a little odd with the cards though, let me book one day no problem wiith my MC, but didn't allow it the next day for similar booking so I had to use the visa debit.

good luck!

I had a bad experience booking a ticket on the AirAsia website. During the process of the booking, travel insurance (from AIG) was included with the purchase. Although the website states that the customer can choose not to buy this travel insurance by choosing 'no thanks' in a following page, I was not given any opportunity to indicate that I did not want to purchase the insurance. Only after I had submitted my credit card details did I find out that the cost of the travel insurance had been included in the purchase, and there was no way to cancel it online.

I rang the call centre in Singapore and they said that I should have chosen the 'no thanks' option. I told them that I was not given the choice and asked that they remove the charge for the insurance that they did not want. They refused to do it and referred me to their 'guest support' hotline in Malaysia. There is no 'guest support' hotline in Singapore and they expect me to incur international phone charges to resolve this matter. When I said that this was unreasonable, the call centre in Singapore gave me an email address: guestsupport@airasia.com. I sent an email to the address and got a reply saying that they will not reply to enquiries because of 'overwhelming e-mails', and that I should call their Malaysian guest support hotline!

Air Asia online and telephone support are famously useless. You can try to fight them over it in person at Air Asia offices in Malaysia, but aren't the sums involved here trivial? And IIRC the "don't want" checkbox is on the same page where it tells you about the insurance...

I just booked a OW on Air Asia from Krabi to KL. I have had some issues with out of the US websites and them accepting credit cards in the past. Last year, I had to book with One Two Go Airlines in Thailand and ran in to the same problem.

I think I have figured out the problem. Because of the fact that they are an internet vendor and they are out of the country, your bank here in the US will automatically deny the transaction regardless of credit or debit. I have tried debit cards/ credit cards/ Visas and MC's all with no luck.

For a visa credit or debit card, you have to register your card with Verified by Visa on visa.com. This is a security enhancement feature that comes with your Visa debit or credit card that allows you to safely buy things online. Same thing goes for Mastercard. I believe its called Secured by Mastercard and it can be found on their website.

I registered my visa through visa.com and retried the booking and the booking went through with no problem. This is the same card that was denied just 5 mins ago. I checked my charges and they will charge in Malaysian Ringgits and your bank will convert it over. That is the only that the transaction will go through especially on Tiger Airways' website because they give you an option where you can elect to be charged in your native currency. If you pick yes to this option, you will get denied every single time by your bank.

Hope this helps...
