I'll be in Seoul for work, but I also have a couple of days free and thought I'd go to one of the above. Any recommendations either way? I've heard that Mt. Seorak has some temples and is in an attractive natural setting. But I gather that Gyeongju might be more historically interesting.

Never been to Seorak-san, but I understand the scenery is breathtaking.

Have been to Gyeongju - capital of the Shilla dynasty which thrived between 2,000 and 1,000 years ago. If you like history, Gyeongju is to Korea what Nara and Kyoto are to Japan. The museums and burial mounds of Shilla kings is quite impressive. Outside of Gyeonju, on the way to Busan, is Bulguksa - an ancient buddhist monastery in the mountains which is also a must see.

I haven't been to Seorak-san either, so can't comment on that. I've also heard that scenery is gorgeous. I guess it's more an outdoor destination, so weather might play a bigger role on whether it makes sense to go there.

Gyeongju is very nice and as the previous poster said, the tombs are great. The main attractions are all quite close to each other so you can even walk between them. Bulguksa is also definitely worth a visit, so another vote for that.

Can warmly recommend the Kolon hotel in Gyeongju. It has a prime location within walking distance of Bulguksa and features a golf course reserved for hotel guests and extensive spa.

Thank you to everyone for the advice and hotel recommendation. After looking into things a bit more, I'm leaning towards Gyeongju.
