I will be in Thailand next month and have always wanted to visit Laos and Luang Prabang. I know September is the rainy season but don't know if that means just afternoon showers, or days of constant monsoon. Unless September is a "don't go" time of year, I would like to go as I don't get to SE Asia often. Thanks in advance for any advice.

My experience in Southeast Asia during monsoon season (Chiang Mai Thailand, July & late August) is that there are periods of torrential rain lasting no more than a few hours, followed by periods of pleasant, dry weather. There are occasionally times when it does rain for longer periods.
I loved Luang Prabang and would return there in a heartbeat! I would definitely go if I were you. Plus the rain will add variety, and also cool things down a bit.
