I know that HI's don't have to upgrade Diamonds, but we're staying at one tonight by where we got married. There are now two in the town, and the new one has rooms with jacuzzis, so I called to ask if they'd upgrade us from a king study room, since it's an early anniversary visit. Their reply was that hotel policy is to only upgrade Diamonds to a king study room??? Anyone heard that before? We ended up staying at the old one, since we've been there before, and know it has good service.

I should add, I'm not upset at the new HI, just thought it was odd and wondered if anyone else had been given a similar reason.

There seems to be no consistency in how HI (or HH in general) defines an upgrade. I have been actually told my upgrade was: your room is not on the 1st floor, you get a bottle of water, you get 2 bottles of spring water, you get distilled waters, you get a room facing the pool (and this was in winter) and a snack, youse get a bigger room, you get a better view over there, you get a room close to the elevator (when my preferences are away from the elevator), you get a new paper every day (the actual words) and a zipper checkout, your room is on the executive level (*very rare now*), you can use the executive lounge on the x floor, you get breakfast, you dont get breakfast because you got a room with a better view..............bla bla bla.

At most hotels I get an upgrade without asking (and find out via online check-in) but at HI's is where I've found it to be none.

The older smaller HI dont have much to upgrade to other than a slightly larger room or jacuzzi. The newer larger HI have some 2 room suites, better Jacuzzis, refrig and microwaves, etc. One HI had LCD tvs in some rooms.

Just curious....

What type of upgrade were you expecting?

Since they had jacuzzi rooms, I was hoping for an upgrade to one of those, which has happened before, at other hotels.
