Mileage Run Deals - Mistake Fare Brewing TZ (ATA) MCO-OGG (Maui) $228rt, travel in October, Y class

Looks to be good the month of October, This is a Y fare (fare class Y8) so inventory should not be an issue.

It is odd that the travel period for a Y fare is restricted, so maybe this isn't a mistake. The normal price for this fare however is $1100+ one-way so it does look suspicious.

ATA has a small route system I won't be surprised if they shut out this inventory quickly, they won't be able to remove the fare but they can control seats even in full coach.

It will start loading around all the reservation systems in the next hour or so --- Seems it is updated on the ATA site now $118 each way.

Cheers,

rosj

Welcome back rosj,
Not sure where to credit the miles, but this is a killer deal on a killer route. Thanks.

Wow. Two low-cost carriers for one low cost price. Itineraries I have pulled up at $278 all-in include Southwest Airlines for the Orlando-Las Vegas and Phoenix-Orlando flight segments.

2,000 points are earned for a RT Hawaii ticket if booked on ATA.com. 6,000 points are needed for a free roundtrip domestic ticket. 9,000 points for a Mexico ticket and 12,000 points for a free Hawaii award. ATA points can also be transferred to SWA Rapid Rewards credits at ATA 7,250 points = 16 SWA credits.

You have to go through OAK and the only part on ATA metal is OAK-OGG. The rest is on WN. You can credit to either WN or ATA.

AFAIK if you credit to WN you get double credits.

Yep (http://www.ata.com/awards/partners/airline.html): "[ATA FF] Members can earn two (2) Rapid Rewards credits for each one-way flight completed to Hawaii or an international destination."

Looks like this is a startup price for Orlando-OGG (seasonal?) service since service does not appear to be available before October at any price. At least not in the several August and September date ranges I checked. Could be a promo fare for the new service but strange that there would be no mention of this on the AT site. Would love to take advantage of this from my home airport but don't have the time available in October. Darn.

Can this be booked out of SEA to OGG?

I agree, it looks more like an october/startup promotion, I've checked all dates until early next year on ATA, and only travel in october is in that price range.

Actually flying via LAS or PHX are better connections (same-day). Flying via OAK doesn't work as well.

How would I book this with a free stopover in LAS? I can't seem to do it on the ATA web site?

Thinking of leaving on a Friday MCO-LAS...then to OGG on Sun/Mon...then returning to MCO the following Monday.

Ok, so let me clear up the is this a mistake mystery.

This fare class is "Y8", and before the new airfare filing it was $1118 one-way with no restrictions now $118 one-way.

Certainly very few if any would ever purchase at that price.

A couple of odd things about the fare though, the filer (ATA) had to put a footnote travel restriction rule on the fare to prevent travel after Nov. 2, this means someone just didn't change the price (out of no where which is odd) they also added a rule (which means there was some intent on changing this fare to a restricted time period from open ended).

So is it a mistake ... only one person in the world knows that (the person at ATA that filed this change).

My friends in Lake Mary, FL thank you! They're going over the Columbus Day Weekend (Oct 5th - 8th):

TZ 743 Y 5OCT MCOLAS (operated by WN)
TZ4403 Y 5OCT LASOGG
TZ4584 Y 8OCT OGGPHX
TZ1956 Y 9OCT PHXMCO (operated by WN)

US$ 278.00 per person, inclusive of taxes & fees.

These are the exact flights I am also booked on. My friends are on the same return flight. We need to decide within 24 hours if we will for sure take this though.

There's a small minority of Flyertalkers who seem to get a buzz from shooting from the hip at others and are very active in doing so. It makes them feel so good, apparently, to score with a self-perceived clever put down. Just remember these folks do not represent the rest of us.

Wrong.

Most of us know the number one rule of mistake fares is not to contact the airline or travel agent in question. If someone posts that a friend from the airline confirmed this is a mistake fare, it is natural to think that the FTer contacted that friend. If, however, what really happened was that the friend called the FTer and said there was a mistake rate to OGG loaded, why not just say that?

The problem is this friend works at Southwest. If you noticed, ATA codeshares with Southwest, and therefore Southwest has a direct interest in not having ATA sell cheap seats on their aircraft.

Cheers,

rosj

how can you tell if this is booked in "Y"? I see the price, but don't see the fare class

But it was said that the friend from WN called the FTer and notified the FTer about this deal. So the friend must not have cared too much about ATA selling cheap seats on WN aircraft.

My point is there is a huge difference, in the MR forum, between "my friend from WN confirmed that this is a mistake" and "my friend from WN alerted me to this deal and mentioned that it's a mistake." One makes FTers  and one makes FTers .

Then why is Rick (http://www.rickseaney.com/) claiming it's a mistake?

ATA also has a Y8 filed with a different footnote which only allows for travel 04NOV07-11JAN08. Shockingly, it is 1110.00 each way.

The problem is this friend works at Southwest. If you noticed, ATA codeshares with Southwest, and therefore Southwest has a direct interest in not having ATA sell cheap seats on their aircraft. That would depend on the nature of the codesharing agreement between TZ and WN -- it may well be the case that WN gets paid a fixed amount per sector, regardless of the TZ fare which incorporates it.

Isn't ATA owned by Southwest?

Booked an awesome weekend flight for my girlfriends birthday weekend, 10/5 - 10/8 for $278 pp. Thanks for the tip. I'm a rookie and this is my first misprint fare to catch. Also, not a bad deal personally for the rewards, as I fly Southwest alot.

Welcome to FT. Do you depart MCO-LAS-OGG and then return on the red eye on 8 Oct from OGG via PHX to MCO? Those are the exact flights I am on.

I see the fare myself. Tempted to pull the trigger but am going to have to pass! For those traveling on this fare, have a great time!

I just noticed this. If you click fare rules (10/19 - 10/22 sample) - it states that the $278 fare is fully refundable.

The rules that everyone else, including myself have seen, is that the ticket is non-refundable and there is a $100 fee for changes.

Okay, just 35% owned by southwest... right?

Well, I called to clarify whether the fare is refundable or not. The rep looked at it and got a supervisor. The sup said that the computer must be wrong and the fare is non-refundable. He then thanked me for bringing the mistake to their attention. He gave me a correct price of $2465 r/t. I asked about the rez I had already made, and he said it would be changed back to the original fare and I could pay the difference or I could get a refund.

Well, I'm, of course, not going to call to inquire :) - but I did finally pull the trigger. Also took a screenshot of all windows at once indicating that the fare is fully refundable.

So? Did you pull the trigger for $2465? Inquiring minds want to know.
FYI, some posters may suggest that next time, don't call to clarify anything until 7 days pass.

Wouldn't it benefit UAUA for Southwest to go down hard for telling OALs how to set their fares?

WN: "Hello ATA, your fare is too low, you need to raise it."
TZ: "OK"
DOJ: "Oh no you didn't"

I have been pondering this (planning a trip to Disney, would insert this little diversion in the middle of that) as the fare is so hot, but I hear really bad things about ATA - anyone know anything about them in particular that would sway you in making this decision?

Thanks
Robin

I know they have a massively underpriced fare to Maui from Orlando right now and are basically equivalent to other US carriers for coach cabin service. 'Nuff said. I think you'll kick yourself if you pass this up at this price.

I think codesharing requires anti-trust immunity from the U.S. Department of Transportation. An excerpt from a random article on the subject:

http://www.tulsaworld.com/business/article.aspx?articleID=070725_5_E1_hThea58574

If the DOT application is accepted, the ... partners would be permitted to increase code sharing, route, schedule and frequent flyer planning, as well as greater cooperation in pricing, advertising, yield management and cargo services.

I am now locked in for these same dates. Heading to MCO on DL vouchers the day before.

Found an incredible deal on a 2-bedroom condo in Maui at $110/night plus taxes. Oceanview room near Kihei. We booked it for 5 nights since some friends are arriving 2 days earlier. But even for 4 nights it is not much more and it might be a good idea to have the fourth night anyway if anyone is staying for just 3 nights since the TZ flight departs OGG at 8.30pm. Three nights is more expensive than four! If anyone is interested in this offer, PM me.

ATA's coupling this with a fare sale, aren't they? Probably no relation to the MCO fare, but I'd just thought I'd throw this out for those interested.

ATA, an air carrier that bills itself as offering affordable air service, has started a four-day airfare sale that features off-peak flights to Los Angeles and Oakland for as low as $139 one-way.

The seven-day advance purchase fare must be purchased at the airline's www.ata.com Web site. It is good for travel on varying dates beginning either late this month or next month and extending through Nov. 15. Other fares include $159 to Ontario, Calif., and Phoenix for $169; Chicago's Midway airport for $269.

Tickets purchased through ATA reservation centers and ticket counters will cost $10 more and the fares are nonrefundable. Taxes and security fees aren't included in the above prices.http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2007/Aug/03/br/br1732405698.html
