Looked at seatguru but seems that there is not a lot of info on it. I am flying alone this route in Y (J/F sold out on me... AA made a mess of my rezy, long story).
Flying out on Friday and will be in coach to HKG:td:

Many prefer 30C/H because the seat beside you is going to be empty except take-off and landing. But some have reported that they were occupied by pax during the flight. 30C/H are blocked and are only available to MPO/OW elites.

Thanks.
Why would A/K would be blocked to begin with?

Because 830/831 have two extra cabin crew to cope with the long duty hours, and there are no crew seats for them to sit in.

Yes 30A/H for sure. But beware other passengers may sit on 30C or 30K as CX does not enforce the crew seat during cruise flight (although this is against the rules, CX couldn't care less.)

Because 830/831 have two extra cabin crew to cope with the long duty hours, and there are no crew seats for them to sit in. I don't think that's the reason. If it's simply a case of having to accommodate extra crew then CX could put them anywhere - and not in the most desirable seats. The real reason I believe is that on Airbus 340-600 there is an emergency exit on either side of row 30 and those need to be manned (or woman-ed) :p but there isn't enough room to position a proper crew seat. Pls correct me if I am wrong.

It will be good if someone on the flight can comment how those seats are taken.
It is okay for an airline to reserve the best seats for crew members, as they need to rest well to continue their service, but perhaps a better way is to modify the configuration or avoid having the crew members resting surrounded by passengers (just an odd feeling). (The seats reserved for the cockpit crew on long haul 744 are good because they are not sorrounded by passengers.)

Based on my 3 and a half yrs experience on this route and approx. 10 occasions sitting in 30A or 30H, the 30A/H seats are the best seats in the house for one traveller. The cabin crew only takes the 30C/K seats during Takeoff and Landing, or significant turbulence enroute while in crusing altitude. Otherwise "in theory", you can occupy the seat and no one to disturb you for 98% of the flight, and you're always LIFO (last in first out). This saves alot of time for the JFK US immigration mayhem as you're only behind J & F when lining up for USCIS clearance. Because of these benefits I am willing go great lengths in adjusting my flight schedules to get these 2 seats. The only problem is the armrests are fixed due to the stowed PTV and table. This also reduces seat width but the legroom and the empty seat, plus the semi-private bulkhead space makes up for it.
These seats were chosen since they are in the bulkhead which causes minimal disruption with other pax and next to the emergency exits which can be handled by the crews if necessary, similar to other crew seats. These seats are therefore kept clear throughout the flight in case there is turbulence (or other emergency) and the crews need to sit down and buckle up.
However, since early-2006 CX crews on this flight does not enforce this rule and I have been "accompanied" by other pax sneaking up to sit 30C/K on both 830/831. On flights out of HKG to JFK, a "CREW SEAT" cover is placed on the seat, but on the flight back, they don't cover the seat at all and even invite pax to move to this seat. The lack of consistency on this rule is obviously a concern for flight safety. I have contemplated to send a letter to FAA and HKCAD to inquire whether this is a violation of applicable regulations.
P.S. I am not bashing CX and I'm just posting my past observations.

Good and well written review on those seats, by the way ^
So have you wrote the letter or not? Mildly 'threatening' CX on this board is not going to get their heavy as$ moving. why don't you just send one off?

I flew on 830/831 to JFK in late May and was booked in 30C or H both ways. I was ready, armed with a digital camera, to gather evidence to write this letter..... but somehow this time, the sun, moon and the stars were aligned in a straight line, the upgrade gods appeared and decided to save this poor Y-class soul.... and I sucessfully obtained J class mileage upgrade on both ways :D I'll try again next time.
Actually if the flight is not full,I would perfer other seats,as you might be given 2 or 4 seats, which is better than 1 bulkheads or emergency exits seat.

Out of curiosity where can I find upgrade rules on CX?

www.asiamiles.com. However, I don't think you can do mileage upgrades with AA miles on CX flights - only full redemption.
