Australia, New Zealand & the South Pacific - Alcohol restrictions in Alice Springs, FYI

On my frequent trips to the bottle shop to pick up some beer or wine, I frequently hear tourists finding out that they can not buy certain alcoholic
items before 6pm. If coming this way there are some restrictions on buying
alcohol in Alice Springs from the bottle shops.
1) The bottle shops don't open until 2pm on weekdays (they open 10am on
the weekend
2) One can not buy cask wine or port wine until 6pm. There is also a limit
of 1 2ltr cask or 1 bottle of port wine per customer.
3) as of 1 August, Alice springs will be a "dry town", there will be no alcohol
consumption in public places that don't have special permits.
4) Soon, personal details will be taken for people buying more then 3 cartons
of beer and several bottles of wine.

I think that about sums it up. Just something to think of if coming to
Alice Springs.

I used to live in Alaska where similar (though often more strict) regulation of alcohol is common in bush communities due to high rates of alcoholism. I assume this is for the same reason?

In Washington the Makah (http://www.makah.com/) reservation around Neah Bay is 'dry'. Must bring your own if your going to do any surfing out there.;)

Yes, restrictions are in place due to alcoholism and violence related with
amongst the local indigenous population.
