Europe - They're Having a Heat Wave in Central and Southern EuropeView Full Version : They're Having a Heat Wave in Central and Southern Europe SkeptiCallie Jul 21, 07, 6:58 am In case anyone misses today's news: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070720/ap_on_re_eu/europe_heat_wave_2 noturbulence Jul 21, 07, 3:41 pm Depends on what one (or Yahoo in this case) calls "Central" - heat wave in Eastern Europe for sure, however, one can really argue whether Austria could be counted as central Europe. If you think more of e.g. Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland in terms of central Europe - well then one can easily say that apart from last week-end, this is currently one of the wettest and coldest summers of the past 2-3 decades - and quite a few people would probably be happy for a change from the incessant rain and early spring like temperatures towards a mini heat wave, at least when looking at the enormous demand for last-minute vacation trips at the moment to get away from the rainy misery in central Europe Aviatrix Jul 21, 07, 3:45 pm Depends on what one (or Yahoo in this case) calls "Central" - heat wave in Eastern Europe for sure, however, one can really argue whether Austria could be counted as central Europe. If you think more of e.g. Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland in terms of central Europe - well then one can easily say that apart from last week-end, this is currently one of the wettest and coldest summers of the past 2-3 decades I have been in Northern Germany since Monday and have had virtually uninterrupted sunshine - the temperature was above 30C when I arrived. JUANMA Jul 21, 07, 4:00 pm Oh lucky them... In Ireland we´ve had so many days of rain that I just stopped counting them... Yesterday was just miserable... Felt like a winter day... Today was better... Thursday was nice... But anyway... if somebody comes to Ireland, can you just pack the sun in your suitcase??? ;) SkeptiCallie Jul 21, 07, 4:05 pm Depends on what one (or Yahoo in this case) calls "Central" - heat wave in Eastern Europe for sure, however, one can really argue whether Austria could be counted as central Europe. Yes, as I said in my post - last week-end (and the following couple of days) were the exception. By now the weather has returned to its usual rainy pattern, OK granted 2-3 degrees C more than the miserable 3 weeks before that last week-end. Just count yourself lucky that you hit the probably one and only 5 sunny day interval this whole summer in central continental Europe - Or, perhaps you should visit more often as you seem to bring the sunshine with you ;) Timfid Jul 22, 07, 9:27 am When I was in Athens at the end of June it got up to 114 F. It was hellish. Thank heavens there were no power failures so we could sleep all afternoon in the air conditioned hotel room. MariaSF Jul 22, 07, 12:18 pm The heat wave started about 10 days ago in Northern Europe. Before that, it was raining/pouring and temperatures didn't go above 20C. jaymar01 Jul 22, 07, 1:04 pm When I was in Athens at the end of June it got up to 114 F. It was hellish. I was in Greece in early June, and it rained every day. :td: alanw Jul 22, 07, 2:57 pm I can assure you there is nothing of the sort in Southern Europe. It's been in the high 70s and cloudy the last four days. |
