I've not been to Australia but I'm trying to gauge costs before my trip. I've heard people say that Australia is extremely expensive and other say Australia has similar prices to the US. When I come to Australia, what can I expect?

Syd is expensive for hotels, but I have found it reasonable for food if you stay away from the water restaurants. Taxi costs are high and it tolls are out of this world. I go on business so I always take taxis but folks tell me you can use the bus to get to the beaches ect

It's a little high, but not that far out of line. There is a GST tax which included on most everything which raises the prices. On the flip side is that tipping is generally not expected although tip jars are starting to show up.

If you list some of your expected destination cities I'm sure there are people here who can help with lodging, transportation and food recommendations.

The Australian dollar has appreciated (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=AUDUSD=X&t=1y) ~15% over the last year, so that hurts a bit.

I thought the lodging was reasonable, but the tourist experiences such as the bridge climb were very pricey.

Where in Australia are you going?

I thought food in CNS and SYD was expensive, but that is probably more a factor of the falling dollar than anything else. But overall, everything seemed about 10-15% more expensive than the comparable stuff in DFW.

Thanks for the help. I'll be visiting Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Cairns.

Thanks for the help. I'll be visiting Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Cairns.

Almost forgot, all of my hotel stays will be reward visits so I won't have much in terms of lodging costs.

Public transportation is basically good in the cities you mentioned and travelpasses can save you quite a lot... For example, the 7 Day GREEN TravelPass for Sydney is AUD $41 and covers travel on all busses, trains and ferries (with few restrictions) within most areas visited by tourists. Check the fare info for Sydney... http://www.sydneybuses.info/tickets/prices.php
