Recently had a bag intended for CX LHR-HKG-PEK misconnected by BA at LHR, delivered several days later. There's little doubt that it's BA's fault - do BA end up footing the bill for pax expenses etc. or is CX stuck with the bill?

Doubtful and since you mentioned BA, incredibly doubtful. :td:

I understand the carrier that last handled the bag is responsible.

I had a bag go missing on a HKT-BKK-SIN routing using TG/CX. Pretty sure it was TG that messed up but CX in SIN paid me out for the delay. (It arrived next day. Wish I could reassure you that BA will get it sorted that quickly but...)

Understood to be true for damage; wish it weren't so for lost/delayed bags since it seems pointless to penalize Cathay for BA's incompetence. Although in this case Cathay never actually "handled" the bag, except to forward it after BA dug it out of their heap of lost bags.

Right now any carrier that operates any kind of hub at LHR is likely to be struggling with an overworked and antiquated baggage system which thanks to UK government rules is having to handle roughly 25% more bags than it actually can cope with. If the last sector was on CX they will help you with the claim, and although that may seem unfair to CX that is common practice. When T5 opens next year the baggage situation will improve as T5 has a modern high capacity system and moving BAs operations out of the other terminals will relieve the pressure on the old parts of the system. If it is any consolation I know that BA dealt with more than their share of CX issues when they first opened the new airport at HKG and more recently IB at MAD. Its just the way that things go in the industry.

The last carrier to fly you is responsible in getting the bag delivered to you. However, I am sure the internal proceedings is that CX will claim from originating carrier.

Sounds more like a defense of BA than a reply to the original question, and perhaps doesn't need a reply, but I should note that the other carriers seem to have done the necessary to cope with that "antiquated baggage system", while BA has apparently chosen frugal staffing, and finds itself with a nightmare of its own making. I don't read every FT post by any stretch, but I've yet to see a complaint in the current time frame about a bag lost at LHR other than off a BA inbound.

I suppose it was in defence of BA. No other carrier at LHR has an operation like BAs at somewhere as dire as LHR. No other carrier has invested in the baggage system, the airport authority does that through the user charges. In those areas that are mainly BA used BA has paid additional fees to assist the upkeep, but it needs to be ripped out and rebuilt from scratch to cope with modern demands. I am sorry if you felt I was off topic, i thought you had raised the questin about why CX would pay for a bag you believe BA lost, and I thought I could give some background to why that may happen.
