Does CX disallow first class around-the-world passengers from traveling on the HKG-JFK **NON-STOP** (the flight via YVR is always available, and the non-stop seems to be NEVER available)

The booking class "A" is always zeroed until a few days before the flight. Perhaps you can book yourself on the indirect and waitlist on the direct flight and hope it clears.

Adding to what KO2546 has said, many FFs have reported that having OW elite status helps a lot (particularly CX DM).

The HKG-JFK will be the longest and the best F Class flights in Oneworld.

However I personally prefer 888 with the 1 stop in YVR.

The trick I've done in the past is call Cathay direct and tell them you will go another airline if they cannot confirm the seats in F on the non-stop flight for you. They usually take 2-3 days (and sometimes more than one try) and then they come back with a confirmed booking on the non-stop flight. To do this, it helps to have good oneworld status and fly F with them a fair bit.

I just took the CX 830 on my AONE6 earlier this month. Much of what is posted here does not jive at all with my experience.

When I first set-up my AONE6 in January/February, A was zeroed out on both the 1 stop and the nonstop HKG-JFK flights for every day that I checked (and I checked quite a few). A few weeks later, however, both flights were back to F4A4 like all other CX flights. It was like this for every flight I checked. In other words, it seems to me that CX is no longer zeroing out A class on this flight.

I chose a random week in November and it is showing A4 for all days except Friday (A0) and Saturday (A2) on the CX 830.

As for the level of service on this flight, to be honest it is nothing special. They now serve lunch as the second main meal service, but the food and wine is no better than any other CX F flight. Also, not everyone likes the Airbus F cabin. It definately is less quiet and spacious than the 744 cabin. FWIW, I think it is fine.

I've seen A availability on this flight on many summer days when booking my AONE4 - YMMV.

Which other Oneworld airline flies HKG-JFK (one stop or Non stop?)

None.

None.

So how can the poster say he calls up CX and tells them he will take another airline and then CX will open up a seat for you?

Beats me, but it doesn't matter because, for the moment, doing so is unnecessary as CX is routinely making A seat available on both HKG-JFK flights.

The poster name suggests that he is from Australia, so he probably meant QF. Also, there is an alternative between HKG and JFK now - JAL. Personally, I think CX can probably confirm the flight in a few days time for MPC and OW elite members regardless of mentioning another airline.

I didn't mean another oneworld airline that flies HKG-JFK. I just meant high status with any oneworld airline... and that separately to tell CX that you would fly another airline for the trip (eg, not necessarily via HK). I used this ploy twice for two RTW first class trips my wife and I used departing Melbourne. One about six months ago (last Christmas) and one in October before that. I've also done it on a circle fare before that (just solo). On all occaisions I had told Cathay I would take some other airline combo as my key destinations were actually London and NY (I just prefer to go via HK if I can to avoid any domestic flying in the US).

...Also just to clarify further, the key destinations on the RTW were London and NY... and then for the circle was just NY. I like going via HK (if I can) because: (a) it can actually be cheaper (it seems a circle via HK to NY comes out a bit cheaper than QF point-to-point in my experience); and (b) LAX and clearing customs there etc. is one of my most hated experiences in life. Coming from Melb, there actually aren't too many options to be honest... I'm glad I have just moved to HK as of six weeks ago.
