American Express Membership Rewards - Where would you dump 90k points??View Full Version : Where would you dump 90k points?? jdrew2 Jul 5, 07, 7:14 pm for reasons beyond my control, I have to liquidate my MR accounts. Where would you put 90K points these days for maximum flexibility... Thanks Joe Beckles Jul 5, 07, 8:02 pm I would pick whatever airline program I already had the most miles in, certainly you must have an account with CO, DL, US, or WN that you use at least occasionally? Hotel points are a poor value compared to airline miles in my opinion ... MumbaiFlyer Jul 5, 07, 8:12 pm Or if you're platinum, you could get two RT tickets on EOS from JFK to London. Well, you'd have to pay $1k on top of the 90k miles. Just another option. bhd87 Jul 5, 07, 8:29 pm Or if you're platinum, you could get two RT tickets on EOS from JFK to London. Well, you'd have to pay $1k on top of the 90k miles. Just another option. Taxes? MumbaiFlyer Jul 5, 07, 9:00 pm Taxes? No, it's just the deal: $500 plus 45k MR points for a RT ticket. Also didn't notice the OP's request for maximum flexibility. My bad. stevenshev Jul 6, 07, 10:19 am Maximum flexibility? I'd say AC. But SQ, AF, and to a lesser extent, NH, are not bad options either. writetorich Jul 8, 07, 3:59 am I think Priority Club/ intercontinental is a safe pick. Will get you plat for two years. True that is not all that valuable. But if you plan to go to Europe with our weak dollar the room nights are very valuable. Moreover, You said you had to liquididate. I think that PC allows transfers back to airlines , but of course at a steep haircut. Better than nothing. Personally, I would stay away from SKYTEAM. Poorest value IMHO. I disagree with esteem poster Beckles. First M.R. points are not the best reward currency to begin with, think SPG in the uture. True that the Hotel CERTIFICATES are a poor value. However Holiday Inn Points and HHonors points via HI are a solid value. jessej Jul 11, 07, 6:05 am go thru all of your frequent flyer accounts and top each one off so that you are at an appropriate level for whatever reward travel you choose then go to cc and trade for the points in the other airline programs that cant be topped off with amex points - say AA for example then trade amex points and top off your hotel programs mendel Jul 15, 07, 3:35 pm I have 100k I need to get rid of... and I also want something really flexible stevenshev Jul 15, 07, 7:56 pm I have 100k I need to get rid of... and I also want something really flexible Maximum flexibility? Yes, but with AC points, you can redeem them for travel on any star alliance airline. Not sure what the point requirments are for AC, but the option to fly on SQ, LH, NH, LX and others isnt bad. bhd87 Jul 15, 07, 10:25 pm I'd vote for NH as far as *A and partner award availability. I am not sure though the expiration of miles with NH though. troyb Jul 16, 07, 7:44 am Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry8100/4.2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102) I never flew Air Canada.. and I don't think I ever will.... Yes, but with AC points, you can redeem them for travel on any star alliance airline. Not sure what the point requirments are for AC, but the option to fly on SQ, LH, NH, LX and others isnt bad. I'll also recommend going with AC. I just got back from a JFK-FRA-CDG-YYZ-LGA trip booked using 80,000 AMEX points via AC in J and couldn't be happier. On this trip I flew SQ, LH, and AC. Sure, some connections were required, but I wanted to fly some new airlines, especially SQ. Also, this trip was only booked a couple months ago and I don't think there are any direct *A flights nyc-CDG anyway. On my flight back yesterday the AVOD wasn't working for the first couple of hours, so they gave the J passengers 8,000 AC miles as compensation. Not bad! stevenshev Jul 16, 07, 8:14 am I'd vote for NH as far as *A and partner award availability. I am not sure though the expiration of miles with NH though. NH is good for availability, but not great for reward redemption rates in certain circumstances. haplology Jul 26, 07, 6:07 am Or if you're platinum, you could get two RT tickets on EOS from JFK to London. Well, you'd have to pay $1k on top of the 90k miles. Just another option. Can I get EOS tickets with SPG points, too? I have an SPG AMEX, but not an MR one. Any links for this - sounds great. I've flown Maxjet, but not EOS. christianj Jul 26, 07, 7:13 am Can I get EOS tickets with SPG points, too? EOS tickets are only available to AMEX Platinum Card (https://www124.americanexpress.com/cards/loyalty.do?page=platinum) holders through a program called Amex Membership Rewards First. You might have what used to be called the Starwood Platinum AMEX card (new card doesn't have any reference to Platinum any more!) but this has nothing to do with the AMEX Platinum card which offers the EOS rewards. Sorry! itsme Jul 27, 07, 10:47 pm NH is good for availability, but not great for reward redemption rates in certain circumstances. When you can only find biz award availability on 1/2 your RT, NH will require a lesser number of miles (coach + 1/2 the difference to biz) rather than the full amount required for biz. That seems to me a circumstance in which NH redemption rate is better than UA's. mendel Sep 2, 07, 2:43 pm down to 75k MR points, any idea's? |
