It's my birthday this month...and I received a card from Cathay Pacific. It's quite a unique card - a large cardboard rectangle which is a picture of a piece of luggage, and physically tied to the cardboard is a plastic baggage tag, similar size to the the marco polo baggage tags. The tag says Happy Birthday, and it is personally signed by KK Leung.
I think they forgot to include the complimentary upgrade coupon.
Is this new? Is this something they send only to Diamonds?

I believe MPC also sends birthday cards to Gold members (depending on the location probably), but just a plain one.
Upgrade coupons - haha! According to others in this forum, and also my friend who flew on his birthday before, they op-up passengers on their birthdays. However, I never flew on my birthday. I do hope to receive a upgrade coupon though.

Got my b-day coming up next week. Will have to make sure I find myself booked onto a 3 class plane on the day in question.

Apparently it is because this past December went and past us and as a CX Gold I never got a birthday card.

I was recently on a AKL-HKG flight and was upgraded to business. Passenger next to me was student on her way back to HK to see her parents for the holidays. Assumed she had rich parents but about half an hour before the end of the flight the cabin crew all gathered round, gave her a box of chocolates and wished her 'happy birthday'. it was very sweet of them.
I assume my neighbour had received a birthday upgrade. A couple of years ago it happened to me too (no chocolates but one of the most expensive birthday presents I've had).

Got same card on about a week prior to b-day. Was also travelling to NRT on actual b-day (with wife + kid for short break). At checkin, was offered an upgrade to J since it was my b-day but declined it since couldn't quite leave the family behind in Y.
On flight itself, whether you get any 'special' treatment flying on your b-day wholly depends on crew. One year got offered a bottle of champagne or wine + chocolates but this time, nothing...not even a greeting from the ISM.

I did make a BKK turnaround on my birthday this year. The ground staff and crews on 713 seemed not noticed there is a birthday passenger. However on the way back on 702,the ground staff greeted me and op upped me and I received a birthday card (not much different from a blank card) and a bottle of champagne. Is this(only upgrade 1 birthday member one sector on one day) the policy of CX?

Isn't it a must for ISM to greet DM even they are sitting in EY? As I know, they should do this to GO too,but they mostly ignore this on regional flights.

I do not know whether that is a must, but I have been greeted almost on all flights, now even on KA flights.
When I was Gold, I also get greetings often on short haul and business, but seldom on long haul.
I suppose it is a good gesture to greeting the b-day person regardless of the status. There are just so few who will spend their birthdays on flights. I never flew on my birthday.

So far I was never greeted by ISM on short haul (in Y and op up to J on my b'day). However this year ISMs greeted me everytime on LHR Y.

When they upgraded me on my birthday, they upgraded Mrs Ieuan as well (but not our two children).

I was traveling myself only. However I guess there should have some differences between HKG and BKK doing op-ups. I was on CXholiday L class ticket with my family twice(other 3 members are all over 16 and we all booked on same PNR and they are all AM members only). The first time on CX702,my status pulled them up to J. However the second time on CX713,only myself was given an upgrade and I know the flights were full of op-upped in J. I have no ideas how is the most updated op-up rules now.

I received a birthday card as well - same as what sxc described.
Next week I'm flying to Europe...too bad just so happens with my meeting schedule, I'm flying HKG-LHR one day before my birthday and LHR-HKG one day after !! probably won't get lucky and get a pre-/post-birthday upgrade ? :)

Wait a second... how do CX know it's your birthday?
I've been a MPC Gold for more than 3 years and I have never received any birthday card. I don’t remember applying for AM did they ever ask me to input my date of birth.
:confused::confused::confused:
Just checked the CX and AM website and see no DOB when updating your personal info.

I think they may have asked for it when we apply for MPC. Note that MPC requires 18yo or above for membership. It was so long ago that I forgot what I did in the application. I am not surprised they do not have a field to update DOB - DOB should not change.
The cards were sent from CX's local offices. So that is location dependent.

Moreover, when you fly to certain destinations you are required to input your birthdate at check-in (you do it for online check-in, or the agent takes it from your passport for live check-in).

I see...
However, I have flown on my birthday month in the past and gotten no special treatment whatsoever, not even a 'happy birthday', so I just thought CX don't keep member's birthdays on record.
This is my birthday month and I'm taking a round trip flight to YYZ this week. Let's see what surprises they might have for me.

Well, I took many flights on my birth month and received no special treatment. My friend who got an "happy birthday" op-up flew on the exact date.

I got one the day before my birthday this year (seated in a 1st class seat on a 346 from HKG to SGN. Was the only one in the FC section. I assume it was a birthday thing, though they never mentioned my birthday.

Do you have to be a MPC member to get the birthday wish and upgrade? The reason I ask is my mom recently flew from CEB-HKG-SIN on her birthday but did not recieve anything. No big deal since the plane was half empty and she had a row to her self for both legs of the journey.

Perhaps. Anyway, I prefer having a whole row to myself in Y to being packed in a crowded J.

now I can answer my own question...there's no upgrade for me one day before and one day after my birthday.
no one ever mentioned anything, ground staff, cabin crew...they don't seem to know my birthday at all (so this info is probably only passed to them if it's on the exact birthday date). I had the same set of crew on the two flights HKG-LHR-HKG (this happened to me at least 4+ times this past year or so already...LHR, AMS, SIN, JFK, etc), and if they did know my birthday I'm sure they'd have said something...

Well I received an upgrade about 2 weeks before my birthday, and about 3 weeks after my birthday. But I don't think they were related to my birthday as the classes were full.

I've only ever gotten b-day recognition (at check-in and in the air) if flying on the actual date itself (but on one occasion didn't even get a greeting from the ISM) but it's also highly dependent on crew.
