American Express Membership Rewards - Domestic 2 for 1

I tried to book a 2 for 1 TPA <--> HNL for November, which was available only on AA. My question to the API rep was whether I can purchase upgrades from economy to business using either cash or miles. They said, "Don't know, call the airline." I called the airline, and the customer rep for AA said, "Maybe, but we don't know until you actually purchase the ticket."

Has anyone been able to upgrade these tickets? Thanks.

I believe you will find mixed experiences, but that you can place a reservation on hold for 24 hours. I assume AA would be able to see the reservation during that hold period and tell you if the fareclass is eligible to be upgraded by redeeming miles.
