So I'm MPO Gold and I held a waitlisted reservation between JFK-HKG on 889 for a roundtrip upgrade to J with miles for Jul 1st. Seatcounter shows J9 C9 D9 I9 (I don't subscribe to EF), which to me implies a lot of availability in J class, and there was nothing in Y. I know to never expect op-ups from JFK cuz it rarely happens, and never has to me.

So, I was a little dismayed that the ticketing deadline, Jun 28th, passed with no change to the waitlist. I checked earlier today to print it out, and for some reason the itinerary still showed up as waitlisted, but not canceled like it automatically should have been. Then my son, who wouldn't lose hope as long as it still showed as waitlisted, checked it about 2 hours ago and came running to me saying that one way (JFK-HKG) was confirmed! I didn't believe him at first, because the ticketing deadline passed, and when I saw the screen, I called up MPC and spoke with an agent. The lady was a bit confused at first because the deadline had passed, but she did say it was confirmed somehow and I was able to select seats (row 86 for me and my son on the 744 - are those good anyone? They're green on seatguru.com) and choose the asian veg meal for myself. After that call, I still didn't believe it, and checked my MPO page and found the miles already deducted, and my itinerary modified. It happened. I'm still on the waitlist for my return, but I got the upgrade and couldn't be happier. I figure I may as well use my miles now because this particular class of ticket is not upgradeable after oct 15th. Pretty cool, yeah? I love Cathay Pacific!

You probably see from other threads already. In my opinion, row 86 is the best, and the seats are normally blocked for MPC and OW elites.

If you get the waitlist on the return segment cleared, I do not know if you may end up getting more miles deducted (two one-way vs one round trip). I have not had such situation before. (The closest I had was a full redemption for my father on HKG-SFO-HKG with one confirmed U and one confirmed X/waitlist U. However, the mileage requirements were the same - 100,000 - so in the end when waitlist U was confirmed, there was no extra mileage deduction.)

Anyway, congratulations!
