This is in the 6/29/07 edition of the Athens Banner/Herald. Possibly good news for those of us in the NE Georgia area:

Airline interested in Athens
Florida carrier applies for subsidy to serve Ben Epps
By Blake Aued | Staff Writer | Story updated at 10:59 PM on Thursday, June 28, 2007

One airline has applied for a federal subsidy to provide commercial air service from Athens-Ben Epps Airport, and at least one other airline is interested in flying out of Athens as well.

Gulfstream International Airline has submitted an application to the Federal Aviation Administration to replace Air Midwest as Athens' commercial carrier, according to Athens-Ben Epps Manager Tim Beggerly.

A Wisconsin-based startup and possibly a group of Athenians also are interested in flying out of the Athens airport, but wouldn't apply for the federal subsidy.

Gulfstream has proposed to take over flights from four eastern cities that Air Midwest is pulling out of, including Athens, Beggerly said. The airline would offer service similar to that of Air Midwest: two flights to Charlotte, N.C., on weekdays and one on Saturdays and Sundays, using 19-seat turboprops.

The Florida-based company, founded in 1988, now offers 207 daily flights among 21 cities in Florida and the Caribbean.

"Their specialty is to go into underserved markets and build up the ridership in those markets," Beggerly said.

Before beginning service at Ben Epps, the airline needs approval from the FAA and a code-sharing agreement with U.S. Airways so passengers can connect with flights in Charlotte.

Air Midwest announced last month it wants to pull out of Ben Epps, but because the FAA designates Athens an "essential air service" city, the company can't stop service until a replacement is found. The designation comes with a subsidy, currently more than $600,000 a year.

Because the deadline for airlines to apply to the FAA passed last Friday, the FAA will almost certainly choose Gulfstream. Locals have some input into, but no control over, the decision. The Athens-Ben Epps Airport Authority likely will ask the FAA to require Gulfstream to offer more flights to more destinations on larger turboprops or regional jets, said outgoing authority Chairman Jim Box.

"We don't want somebody who's just going to come in and ride the subsidy," Beggerly said. "We want to go above and beyond."

With a runway extension and a new commercial terminal planned in coming years, airport officials say they want to grow the airport into a regional one that will serve not only Athens, but all of Northeast Georgia and even some north Atlanta suburbs.

The first step is to find a replacement for Air Midwest, a company that's drawn criticism for poor service and shoddy maintenance. Officials also are searching for an airline or even several airlines that are willing to expand service beyond a dozen flights a week and fly to multiple cities.

One group is interested in starting an airline based in Athens, Box said, but he would not provide details.

"Everything's confidential at this point in time," he said.

Green Bay, Wis.-based MetJet, a startup that won't start flying until next year, also sent a proposal to Athens-Clarke officials earlier this month.

MetJet wants to make Ben Epps one of its hubs, offering three daily flights on 50- or 100-passenger jets to Gary, Ind., an overflow airport serving Chicago, and to Clearwater, Fla., near St. Petersburg. It could eventually expand to other cities like Nashville, Tenn., Washington, D.C., Detroit and New York, said founder Michael Heisman, an Atlanta native.

"(Ben Epps) is the brightest diamond in the rough I've ever seen, and I don't know why people don't capitalize on it," Heisman said.

MetJet would offer a unique pricing system. One-way flights would cost $75 to $150, but passengers also could purchase cards for unlimited flights for $1,500 a year or $2,000 for two years.

The company would need a $1.5 million investment from the Athens-Clarke government or business community to begin operations, Heisman said. The money could be paid back by selling advertisements on the airline's Internet travel guide or in-flight magazine, he said.

While airport officials agree with Heisman's rosy assessment of Ben Epps' potential, they first want to draw an established airline. The airport is organizing an airline subcommittee that will try to recruit an existing company to serve Athens without the essential air service subsidy, giving locals more control.

"Right now, we need an airline that's up and running," Beggerly said.

Any news on why the delay with Gulfstream starting up in AHN?

As a native of Atlanta now living in N NJ, I have never understood why there are not more flights to Athens. The population in near by Gwinnett is 0ver 700K. That alone would support flights to major markets. Also, NE Atlants is home to a very large corporate presence.

I always thought it would make a great airport for Southwest.

Very true statement about Gwinnett County, when I moved to Gwinnett County in 1990 there was talk of Briscoe Field (Lawrenceville, GA) becoming a regional commercial airport. I am not an aviation guy but I seem to remember people saying that it could handle a 757. Nothing ever came of it though

Just curious if anything ever came out of this?

You would think the university would drive some of this since UGA attracts students from all 50 states and who knows how many countries. Some days they might be better off flying into GSP or Augusta than into ATL.

I live 70 minutes from ATL with no traffic (never a guarentee) and about 25 minutes from AHN with no traffic (always a guarentee). I'd joyfully receive a Delta Connection flight from CVG into there. Southwest would be a great idea too.

A new terminal in the future? First I have heard of that.

Wings Air was supposed to start service earlier this year from Lawrenceville-Briscoe to ATL but it never got off the ground. Any idea why? Obviously, ATL is a huge financial machine in the region and I just wonder if that influence keeps other potential airports from even having a chance.

Athens-to-Atlanta air service to begin on Monday

Wings Air is set to begin flights between Athens and Atlanta on Monday and another carrier, Georgia Skies, plans to begin the same service soon.

From Airlineinfo.com this bit of news is most interesting:

We also find that Georgia Skies has an advantage over Wings Air regarding the third criterion -- enhanced connecting opportunities beyond the hub. While neither carrier has a code-share agreement with a major carrier at Atlanta, as an operating carrier, Georgia Skies does have interline ticketing and baggage handling agreements with most major carriers, while Wings Air currently has none.

Finally! Georgia Skies gets it going:

GeorgiaSkies is starting flights between Georgia cities Atlanta, Macon, and Athens, with six daily nonstop flights from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The airline will offer two round-trips between Athens and Atlanta, and four daily round-trips between Macon and Atlanta. GeorgiaSkies will offer $9 air fares on its Web site starting Sept. 19 at 8 a.m. The airline's standard fare for both Macon and Athens is $49.

GeorgiaSkies replaces Mesa Airlines in Athens, which was without scheduled air service for several months. GeorgiaSkies is a unit of Dallas-based Pacific Air Holdings, a collection of airline brands serving New Mexico, Hawaii and Nevada.

GeorgiaSkies President Gabriel Kimbrell said the $9 fares are a way to drive visitors to www.flygeorgiaskies.com and bring in first-time customers.
"Once people see how fast and easy it is to fly to Hartsfield instead of driving and parking there, we hope they will become repeat customers and next time buy a ticket that isn't $9," Kimbrell said.

In an email today from Wings Air:

T-GATES!
American Airlines has greed to handle Wings Air’s ground operations at the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport based upon an agreement reached last week.

Beginning on November 1st, Wings Air’s Athens and Macon flights will arrive at and depart from the T-Gates in Atlanta.

Customers will go through TSA security in Athens or Macon so they can go directly to their Atlanta departing gate without having to clear security in Atlanta.

anyone have any firsthand experience with one of these new services ATL to AHN ? i'm thinking about booking one but the georgiaskies website (for example) is so simple that it makes me wonder if it really is a functional airline ...

also, any clue as to what aircraft are being used? when i used to fly from charlotte to AHN on usairways codeshare it was 1-1 and had to duck even in the aisle.

well in spite of knowing pretty much nothing about georgiaskies, a free flight was too good to pass up! free for christmas day and maybe the day before and after, as per this article:

we shall see. gotta love a good ol' price war, whether gov subsidized or not...

At some point, more than 24 months back, there was a studyfloating about on service into Athens prepared by a consultant. Along with the study, there was a claim that it had been sold to (or prepared for) WN. Certainly, given some of WN's destination choices, a good case could be made for AHN, although current added destinations probably make it momentarily unlikely.

well i can report that the flight itself on georgiaskies was smooth and the pilots nice - but getting to the aviation terminal was ****** to say the least. i undervalued having a flight that leaves from a main concourse ...

I wish I had found this thread earlier. I was down in ATL a couple weeks ago and definitely would've tagged on the extra couple hours of flying to take a tour of Athens and Macon by air. Next time, I suppose. :D
