Avis - No one-way - CSR suggests lying

Called for a OW rental BOS-EWR (flight cancelled).
Agent says no one way available - I'd have to return the car to BOS. I pointed out that it wasn't exactly practical. Agent suggests that I tell them I'm returning to BOS, then call on the way to EWR and say I'm changing the return.
National had a OW car available.
Anyone know what might have happened had I taken the CSR up on the offer?

Read Avis' T&C - you'll get socked with a surcharge, for starters.

But if you need to go, you need to go. Sounds like the agent was just thinking outside of the box.

Your rate would have defaulted, but considering that there are tons of Tri-State cars on their lot, I find it hard to believe they had none (they have to check them).
When you got to EWR, you could of made a little fuss and they would have changed the rate to one-way or similar, EWR is good for being lenient at times, and you could have said the agent you called never mentioned anything about transferring out of your vehicle along your journey to lock in a one-way rate.

I have done this once before, although not those cities... Upon drop-off, my rate did indeed almost double, and the agent said she couldn't adjust rates on drop-off; I would need to call.
I ended up calling my corp travel agent to let them settle it - they got me back to my original rate with little hassle.

I've done it once or twice, once from ORD to STL, again in the situation where a flight was canceled. I got hit with a surcharge that about doubled the price, but I made my meeting.... no other companies had cars available.
Avis is about the worst rental company in terms of one-way, exceeded only by Enterprise. I've been unable to get a one-way quote out of CVG (multiple times), DFW, SAT, ORD, ATL, RDU and a couple of other markets. My first call now is to Hertz, where I've had about 99% success on one-ways.

You'll get a list of the easy one-way rentals from any given point.

Right, but I was standing at the gate w/o wireless, and with the corporate requirement to use our preferred rental agency or get advance permission from our travel agent.
Avis sucks for one way. Hertz and National, especially latter, are the best companies by far for one way.

I have an Avis agent in CA that I use regularly if I need one-way and the website shows none available. I have in the past made the RT reservation and then upon pick tell them it's one-way. No additional charges or problems. Might be because driver is Wizard and we use them exclusively.
