American Express Membership Rewards - Can Amex points be transfered to someone else's airline account

I am a bit new to the Amex Rewards program. I have been earning points for about a year or two, but haven't tried to redeem them yet. Do I have to transfer the points to my own hotel or airline account, or can I transfer some of them to a friend's account as well?

Officially you can transfer only to your own account or the account of someone who holds a supplementary card. However, in practice if you do everything online, speaking to no one at American Express or the other program, there is a high probability that a transfer will succeed.

If not, you could obtain a supplementary card for your friend. Bear in mind the card only needs to be issued and activated, it does not need to be used, which means you do not need to physically give the card to the other person if it is not appropriate in the relationship. Depending on the card you may receive a bonus offer for ordering supplementary cards, but there may also be an annual fee.

It works, and it's easy (for every airline I've tried). Just link your card to their freq. flyer number, and put your own name in the name field.

I have told four separate agents that I would like to transfer points into my mother's account and the response is always "Sure!" Just my experience...

Yeah, me too. Seems like Amex has absolutely no problem with this, despite the wording on their website that implies otherwise.

Excellent, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear :)

I was going to post the same question as the OP, but I did a search and found this thread. I just want to make sure that this works as easy as it sounds. So if I met a new "friend" on Coupon Connection and wanted miles transferred into my account rather than mutual gifting of awards, he or she could transfer their Membership Rewards points into miles in my account even if we do not have the same last name or same address or whatever?

Yes, that is correct.

I got my father-in-law (different last name, different address) on the line with me and the Amex CSR made a "special exception" and allowed him to transfer his miles into my AMEX MR account. It was a great day.
