Today's Guardian newspaper has an article on how it will soon be possible to construct a RTW itinerary on LCC (via the UK, Hong Kong and Canada to start with).

http://travel.guardian.co.uk/article/2007/may/05/saturday.travelwebsites

It also includes suggestions for low-cost routings to Australia and South East Asia from the UK. I'm sure many of these have already been discussed here by members of FT of course!

Its refreshing to read this article where everything needed for a low cost RTW trip is in one place. Thanks for the link. Can't wait till Oasis comes to OAK.

I heard Arthur Frommer once say that there is an inverse relationship between quality and enjoyment of a trip and the cost.

In many ways I concur. On the LCC's -- well....

The Times ran a similar article on Sunday 15 April. I found it the other day in my local library. The title was "Around the world for less than 500 pounds".

I noticed how the article clearly pointed out that it won't be like flying Ryannair around the world. :)

It also notes that travelling to Australia taking 3 low-cost flights is probably not in fact going to be a great saving over flying on a regular carrier.

A great link (which links to many other links!). Quite a comprehensive article. Enjoy reading it. Thanks.

It will be interesting to see what this LCC expansion does to longhaul fares...as more carriers are able to offer competitive prices for what's shaping up to be similar economy digs to what the "majors" are offering...
Glad that it's not 10 hours on Ryannair. And, as the prev. post points out, taking a few of these LCC's won't be much cheaper, if cheaper at all, than one "major" in economy. An interesting shift in the landscape, to be sure.

My first longhaulflight was with an LCC in march 1986 ! People Express was their name.
http://web.mit.edu/jsterman/www/SDG/MFS/PE.html
And they offered BRU-SFO for 149 US$ all incl. and NYC-BRU for 99 US $ all incl. LAX-MIA-NYC I got on Eastern airlines for another 99 US$.
After 2 years they gave up, and they have been bought up by Texasair and Continental.

Article in the Daily Telegraph today about a guy who went round the world in 8 days using only LCC's.

Just to see if it could be done I guess.

No problem at all. I knew I'd seen something on here about it before but I couldn't find it.

Ticket cost him about 1,000GBP

Round the world ticket on *A (ex Australia) = 1,175GBP

(put the miles on bmi and you've got a stab at status and a heavily discounted Business Class ticket - more than worth the 175GBP in my book. For those versed in the ways of FT, going RTW on LCCs is a false economy)

Hmm... interesting math on this one ....

If you add up the fares listed, it comes to £960. So with the conversion, it's closer to USD $2000 than to $1600. Still not a bad fare, but for $2000 I'd be looking at mileage earning options in addition to the LCC options.
