What a bunch of BS. Perhaps they could offer the greeters the option to bake their cakes/cookies at the airport under supervision. Of course, that won't solve the real problem -- greedy airport vendors.

The latest from today's Bangor Daily News:

I don't care how much they protest it, there's no doubt in my mind this dust up was started by the airport vendors, especially the Red Baron Coffee Shop. I will be forced to utilize this airport when visiting my mother in the future, but will plan to boycott ALL of them (not that they care, I'm sure, but at least it's something).

but in all seriousness, you're spot on in terms of greedy airport vendors. like the war or not, it's the troops that deserve the support and it's a great morale boost to have folks come out and do this. there needs to be more media coverage on this. possible headlines.......

"bangor international airport bans girl scouts from serving cookies to our troops"
"bangor international airport says mom's apple pie not good enough for our troops"

In 2005, my chartered flight stopped for refueling in Bangor. We all deplaned and were met by the greeters. I had no idea and was in tears that people would do this. They saw us off as well-it was very moving. There was nothing to the airport, small and no facilities worth mentioning. The vendors donated phone cards and cell phones, coffee, etc.
Shame on them. They have no idea what those people meant and continue to mean to the military personnel who transit through there.

http://www.flybangor.com/news.htmlAccording to Airport Director, Rebecca Hupp, “It is clear that we over-reacted by imposing a ban on food items. While we had concerns over certain food items, particularly those that require refrigeration or special handling, a complete ban was not required or called for. I would like to apologize to our troops, the Troop Greeters, and the community and thank those who communicated their concerns to us on this issue.”

Assistant Airport Director Tony Caruso also clarified the Airport’s relationship with its concessionaires. “Our concessionaires have not complained to us and pledge to continue their support of the volunteers. The concern over meeting the Airport’s contractual obligations to them was strictly on the part of the Airport. Our concessionaires fully support the efforts of the Maine Troop Greeters.”Next time THINK, you dolts.

They greeted us coming back from Bosnia in '97. It was a very nice touch.

They didn't back down or think-go up & read the article from the Bangor Daily News that I posted on 6/23. The Greeters are only allowed to hand out certain items, all commercially prepared & individually wrapped, & must wear gloves while doing it.

It's interesting, though, that Hupp is trying to now claim that the 'concern' was over items that 'require refridgeration'-last time I checked, home made brownies & cookies didn't need that! I'm even more certain the airport vendors were the ones who complained, albeit under the auspices of 'unsafe food handling practices' :td:
