I will be visiting Houston for the first time (other than the airport) and looking for some good restaurant picks. I always hear about the large populations of Vietnamese and Indian populations and the great food options they bring. Any help is greatly appreciated.

wrong answer to the right question

I go to dallas. there are a huge number of viet, indian, thai, "siam" restaurants. all seem to be quite decent. look in Zagat, and maybe the local paper (both dallas and ft worth do this) list and review all the restaurants in the local area.

the prices are about half dc, so wrong place is not a big loss.

new shopping center will have two new. all cook well.

Go to TEXAS for SE ASIAN cooking??????????????????

Considering they are the third largest group of Vietnamese in the US, they have a tremendous amount to offer. Wish I could go to Dallas, but I'm stuck going to Houston for business.

Go to TEXAS for SE ASIAN cooking??????????????????Spoken like someone who really doesn't know much about the cuisine in Houston, Texas.

There are terrific options for dining in Houston! And, yes, great Vietnamese most definitely available. A favorite of mine and my friends' was Mai's (http://www.maisrestauranttx.com/) over on Milam. (Whoa! They didn't have that fancified website when I lived in Houston! ) And, there are all kinds of Vietnamese places in MidTown.

I know there are good Indian places, but we didn't tend to frequent them, as we were college students, most of the better Indian places are pricey and are outside the 610 Loop.

DCATravel, are you interested in just Vietnamese and Indian? How about Cajun? Barbecue? Seafood? Mexican? What sort of price range are you thinking? The dining in Houston is cheap, but there is some variety in price. IMHO, the restaurant scene in Houston is the best of any large American city, IMHO, if you don't limit yourself to just haute cuisine.

I go to dallas.

Wish I could go to Dallas ...Well, that makes two of y'all. ;)

In Houston, good places to eat are usually easy to find, it just depends on where you're staying and if you have a car. Don't know too many Indian places, mainly Vietnamese. In Midtown, there's Mai's, Van Loc, and Pho Saigon that serve traditional pho and bun. Les Givral's in a Vietnamese sandwhich place that serves CHEAP sandwiches (~$2) in addition to pho and bun. They only take cash, but it's a can't beat cheap eat!

Another area to consider is Southwest Houston, particularly around Beltway 8 (toll road) and Bellaire Bouleavard. This area has a large concentration of Asians, primarily Filipinos, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Taiwanese. Any place you eat in this area is bound to be good.

Other things to have in Houston are fajitas and BBQ. Too many good places to eat in this city!

My wife and I enjoy the food at Mai's. The food is great and the prices are very reasonable. Les Givral's is a great place for a quick lunch (the price for those sandwiches can't be beat), but I have never eaten dinner there.

If you're looking for a larger restaurant, there is Kim Son, where they have a good menu selection. http://www.kimson.com/downtown/index.htm

Mai's is a great place to get started on Vietnamese (that's how it was for me at least).

I've never been to the Givral in Midtown but have always been to the one on Bellaire and those are still my favorite sandwiches.

My wife and I just ate at Vietnam Coast on Hillcroft yesterday afternoon. It doesn't look like much on the outside but the food is great (a little more expensive than the places on Bellaire but you're paying for the convenience of being five minutes from the Galleria).
