The airport toll road is free for rental cars. when you pull up to get a toll ticket, tell them it is a rental car. they play with some numbers, and give you a toll ticket. same when you arrive at the pay toll booth.
I have not tried to use the airport toll road for free other than when picking up or returning my car.

I am trying to figure out why you'd go through the toll at all... To pickup and return rentals you can get out of the airport for free by simply following the signs.
I guess from the north entrance you could possibly go through the toll but you could avoid that as well by exiting before you get to it and following the signs.

But from the North side of the airport, I assume that if you don't go through the airport, you take the side service road. If so, it has a much lower speed limit and a number of red lights. So if time is a factor, I could see why someone would want to go through the airport.

I'm not a dallas native(thanks to amighty) so do not know back roads, but from south of airport to state hwy 121 north, is that not the most logical trip for a visitor? particularly at no charge?

Coming from north 121, I'd take the "access" road to the rental car area. There are a few lights.
The toll isn't that expensive either (as long as you enter and leave from the same exit). When you go through the airport (what I used to do to get to work), the toll is significantly higher.
If you go through the north entrance, you can go through the first toll booth and get a ticket. I dont tell them I'm returning a rental, I just take my ticket and get on my way. I stay on the toll road until I reach the exit toll on the south end of the airport. I never get asked to pay anything. They simply take my ticket and say "thank you" and raise the gate. I then exit to the side road immediately after passing the toll to return the rental car.
It is much faster this way than taking the side roads with the lights, and it doesn't cost anything.
