I'm trying to buy a ticket using my UA miles between LHR and JNB. Calling the airline is less than quick, so I was going to trawl through seatcounter to check for availability. What fare bucket do mileage tickets books into on SAA?

thanks

O, I, X - but seatcounter doesn't show these buckets. You couls sign up for Voyager and use the book by miles function on the website. That is, if it allows you to search for flights which would cost you more miles than you have in your account. That's something I don't know.

If that doesn't work post you dates and COS and I'll have a look for you. The other unknown is if SA makes all award seats available to UA, in other words it might well be that I could book an award with Voyager miles which you cannot book with UA as this award might not be available to UA. It seems to me, however, that all awards that are available to Voyager are available to Miles & More so I guess your chances are pretty good.

Sign up to ANA - and use there tool to check for award availability - seems to be the best way there is that I know of.

Join All Nippon Airways (ANA) frequent flyer club called the ANA Mileage Club --> http://www.anaskyweb.com/us/e/amc/index.html

Once you’ve registered they’ll email you your Mileage Club number straight away Once you’ve got that number, go here --> https://aswbe-i.ana.co.jp/p_per/sky_...SearchLogin.do (https://aswbe-i.ana.co.jp/p_per/sky_ip_per_en/preAwdSearchLogin.do) and login. Then click on the middle blue bar on the right “Star Alliance flight awards”, and search for the flights you want.

Air Canada's Aeroplan also has a tool like ANA's, and in my opinion the AC version is easier to use (not to mention fully in English).

That's interesting news to me! :)
Is it as easy to sign up for the AC plan as it is for ANA?

I didn't have any trouble. The Canadians are a fairly accommodating people, after all.

The only problem with the AC plan is they seem to close your account after 1 year of no activity - according to an email I recently received.
