Hertz - Mexico Rentals

I have to make several trips further than 30 miles into Mexico so I am trying to determine the most cost effective way to rent a car. Last two times I flew into San Antonio. I was told Hertz is the only co. that can provide insurance for a trip further than 30 miles into the country because my own insurance co. does not provide liability in MX. I also purchased AMX premium which is for theft and damage on the car only, not liability.
Hertz last two trips Car was $66 per day MX insurance was $35 per day.
My question is if the car is rented in MX do you think the liability insurance would be cheaper? I know the Per day on the car is. This would offset the expense of flying into MX.
Next month I will need the car for a 6 to 8 week period so I'm trying to economize. Or could I purchase a liability policy similar to mine at home in MX for an extended period rathr than Hertz's daily policy? I have to get a 1 year visa for the trip.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

You are in a tough situation. I would rent in Mexico if I were you. I think that the Hertz locations there are not as convenient and the products are not as nice, however the cars have Mexican plates. That was HUGE for me. The Mexican plates will save you a lot of grief.
My rental was marginally cheaper in Mexico. I still had to get additional insurance. I did not check my Platinum coverages, but I knew my regular insurer was not cevering my car in Mexico.
The biggest problem you will find in Mexico is exchanging the car every fe weeks. It will not be like the US where you drive up, jump out and get in your new vehicle. Maybe try an airport location there. That might be more similer. I was in an HLE equiv. But everything took time and the cars were...ok...

About two years ago, I was able to rent a car in Tijuana but was not allowed to drive in the United States. Not sure if that has changed, but if you are planning on being on both sides of the border, stick with an American rental.

Very true!!! Good point. It is generall a pain getting a rental across the border...either side.

When i drove a car from LGB down to Mexicali I would stop at a service station along the way that sold specifically a Mexico insurance policy - although it was about 5 years ago now and I dont recall if the policy allowed for more than 30km past border or not ... just another option to check into.

Often times those policies are great for privately owned vehicles, but are not valid for rentals. You just need to ensure that you are getting the appropriate policy.

Hertz has made it clear it HAS to be their insurance policy (the overpriced one).

Something I ran into in CUN when renting was that the check-out also required you to put down a deposit, even on your credit card. It was credited back on return (actually I never saw it on my statement) but that might be different if you keep the car more than a few days.
That may also have been a requirement they had for not using their insurance product.
Try Advantage Rent a Car. They have nice cars, good prices and sell Insurance for Mexico.
