could not find any posts on this...

anyone has used Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7 noise canceling headphones for plane rides?

I always wear foamy ear plugs, so I am thinking to wear some kind of headset over my ears to get total noise cancellation + ear pressure support

I wrote a report on FT about them after CES as I wrote up some articles on the new headphones:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=653509&highlight=new+headphones+bose+audio+technica

There were two major new noise cancelling HeadPhones released at CES, Able Planet and Audio Technica. Audio Technica reduces the most background noise, or keeps out the most noise over Bose and others over the ear headphones. The audio quality isn't as good as other headphones out there but if you're not an audiophile and just want to reduce noise then they are good and cheap, about 100 bucks less then bose.

I'm not in love with Bose anymore, I still have them but I seem to be taking a pair from Able Planet on my most trips and I'm not into the Shure as I personally don't like in the ear headphones, the Able Planet are the same cost as Bose but they have a better quality of audio and they seem to block out more noise then Bose. The audio technica block out more noise however and are as I said 100 dollars cheaper. I didn't go to your link but they should be 199 or less. I can personally fly with either of the three.

Many thanks for the response. I dont care much about the audio, I care a lot about noise reduction. Based on what you said and few feedbacks on amazon, I am going to go with Audio-Technica

Cheers

If it's just the noise then I think you're making a good investment, they are just fine and worth the price and block the most noise of any headphone I've tested so far.

I'm going to bump this older thread as I have just finished my fifth trip with these headphones and can write a detailed review.

Sound: Excellent "natural sound" While fans of the warm artifical bass sound exhibited by Bose units might object to the sound quality of the Audio Technica headphones, I found these headphones to have excellent sound quality.

Noise cancellation: I put these units in a head to head with Bose QC3s on several AA flights, and the Audio Technica headphones provided at least as much active noise cancellation of the Bose unit. At home in a quiet environment, without any music source, you could notice a very slight hiss, however in normal operation its not noticable.

Comfort: This is where the Audio Technica units loose some ground to the Bose QC2 and some other units such as the Sony NC-60s. Unlike the QC2 and the NC-60's that have very large, deep ear cups, the Audio Technica units have much smaller ear cups. For those with larger ears, the padding may rest on the top of your ear. At first, I suffered from some discomfort after 3-4 hours of wear, but on subsequent flights, I sized the headband a bit larger then normal and made sure the earcups were well positioned on my ears from the get go, and this helped a ton. Despite these limitations, I still found the Audio technica units to be more comfortable then the QC3's, as the QC3's make my ears hurt like crazy after 5 hours of use due to their on ear design.

Overall: I bought these from an Amazon.com merchant for around 125 dollars shipped. At this price these units are by far the best active noise cancelling units out there IMHO. They sound great, are OK in the comfort department, and have good noise cancellation properties.

Thanks for bringing this thread up again halcyongolf. I have been looking at getting a pair of noise cancelling headphones and just could not pull the trigger on the Bose due to cost. I have been using a set of in ear noise blocking Shure but have not found these to do what I wanted. I have been reading about the ATH-ANC7 and will give them a try, for $125 they sound like a good bet.

I had similar concerns with the price of the Bose headphones and picked up the ATH-ANC7 set online this September. I love them. One of the key features I think is the audio pass through. If I remember my research right on the Bose headsets if the battery dies for the noice canceling you don't get any sound. With the A-T set you can use them as regular headphones after the batteries die.

Battery life has been excellent with these units. I am on my 30th hour on the same AAA battery and its still going strong. I made sure to place some extra AAAs int he small pouch inside the case, and I am sure I will be able to make any trip from beggining to end on a single battery.

A friend of mine bought the Bose 3 headphones, I got these. Head to head, I cannot tell much of a difference for noise cancellation. I do believe the Bose 2 (over the ear) might be better, but I cannot test this. Still, at about 1/3 the cost, these are a winner to me hands down.

I am no audiophile, but I can say that I really like the sound quality when listening to DVDs from my laptop.

If you look at these on amazon.com, you'll find they get a lot of good ratings out of hundreds of responses.
