Star Alliance - *A Upgrade on UA Miles Qs

I am a UAMP member and was planning to use miles for a one-way upgrade from Y to C between US and India (30,000 fron N. America to Central Asia zone). But the *A upgrades according to UA and *A sites are awarded on "segment" basis only. And no airline travels non-stop between IAD-BOM which means there have to be 2 segments.

So in this case how would an upgrade work? Is it possible to use 30K miles and securea complete one way upgrade?
