Just noticed that on my Dell Latitude D620 there is a sim card slot right under the battery. What is it for? Can I just insert my T-Mobile sim card and connect (as slow as that may be)?

My Dell, an X1, has the latter. cme2c May 22, 07, 11:43 pm I know they made them for the Europe market that would work with Vodafone service. I would just do an internet search with your Dell model number and see what services it would support. yevlesh2 May 22, 07, 11:43 pm 100% sure its a SIM card slot - even inserted my SIM card card in there - perfect fit. Other google hits showed primarily UK sites: Trusted Reviews (http://www.trustedreviews.com/notebooks/review/2006/05/18/Dell-Latitude-D620/p4) Reghardware.co.uk (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/06/20/dell_hsdpa_laptops_not_tied_to_vodafone/) GadgetFreak May 23, 07, 12:05 am 100% sure its a SIM card slot - even inserted my SIM card card in there - perfect fit. Neat. But I wonder how you can unlock a computer since you have TMobile. There might be a way to do it. ScottC May 23, 07, 7:00 am Was it ordered with mobile broadband? It could just be a simcard slot for a non-installed broadband module. Does the software for the module show up on the machine? Try entering the service code of the machine and see if it lists the option as installed. Unless it was ordered with it, my money is on it just being the reader that leads nowhere. bdjohns1 May 23, 07, 9:03 am Was it ordered with mobile broadband? I'm pretty sure this is the case - I've got a 620 also, and I have the SIM slot but no cellular module. It also has the indicator light for Bluetooth, but no Bluetooth module. Loren Pechtel May 23, 07, 11:18 pm I've seen someone using a small computer as a cell phone. It did have a SIM slot in it. Big_Dutch May 26, 07, 7:30 am Neat. But I wonder how you can unlock a computer since you have TMobile. There might be a way to do it. T-Mobile does not have 3G yet, so even if you could "unlock" the computer, it still wouldn't work with a T-mobile sim OliverS May 26, 07, 10:33 am T-Mobile does not have 3G yet, so even if you could "unlock" the computer, it still wouldn't work with a T-mobile sim Are you sure about that? I think it should work, just not as fast (GPRS only).. alanw May 26, 07, 11:45 am It would work. The module is also EDGE-capable and you'd get pretty decent speeds. My Sony Vaio SZ has EDGE only and I'm using it on Cingular with great results for mail, surfing, etc. I can't detect a huge difference between EDGE and EVDO from a Verizon ExpressCard. Dell will unlock the modem for you so you can use it on T-Mo (if indeed it does have a modem). Just call support and tell them you're headed overseas and need the subsidy lock code. |
