Hey folks! I work at Safeway as a checker and am a border line miles junkie here in Seattle. Often times I will see someone using a United, Alaska or Airmiles (Canada only) debit/credit card to purchase their groceries and of course using the Safeway card to save a couple bucks. More times then not they are not aware that they can earn miles when they link their ffm number with the Safeway card. So this is just a friendly reminder to contact Safeway at 1-877-723-3929. I believe they will credit at least the dollar amount of the last time you shopped at Safeway towards your millage program. They did this for me a while back so they might still do this and if not doesn't hurt to ask. Just a friendly reminder for those who might not be in the know.

AS and UA are the options for Seattle. It might vary from area to area.

When I do my shopping at Safeway I'll use my Safeway club card (1 mile for every two dollars spent) and will pay on my AS credit card (1 mile for every dollar spent). So say I spent $30. I'd get 30 miles off my cc and 15 from my Safeway club card for a total of 45 miles ^ I hope that helps ya out if I understand your question correctly.

So, like a true FTer, you keep your own Safeway Club card on hand to "help out" any customers that don't have one of their own checking out, right? I'd think you could rack up a whooooole lotta miles that way over time. I'm not sure how pleased our employer would be, but everyone else wins.

Same for me.
BTW one nice thing about Safeway, unlike some other retailers, is that they take AmEx, so I can get membership rewards points, and have more flexibility as to how to use them that if I used an airline card.

Yes! :D
As fly4funsea stated, you'll earn both miles from your UA credit card and the Safeway miles. That's how I fed my addiction when I lived in AZ! :D (It didn't hurt that Safeway was the nearest store to my house! :D)
And if you link it to an AX, because they offer Always Double Miles at supermarkets, you can do even better! :D A $100 grocery bill would earn 200 miles or points from AX plus 50 miles from Safeway - for a total of 250 miles! :D
In the northeast, I do that with ShopRite. They have a similar deal with CO. (And the CO MC also gives double miles at ShopRite! :D) So for the same $100, I earn 200 miles for the MC and 50 miles for ShopRite!
And if you AX is a DL SkyMiles AX (like mine is), I can earn both DL and CO miles for the same trip to ShopRite! :D

No longer true for all American Express accounts--they did away with Everyday Purchase double miles at supermarkets, drug stores, and gas stations.

Only DL SkyMiles AX (to my knowledge) still gets double miles at supermarkets.

I don't shop for groceries at Randall's unless out of sheer necessities because of their high prices but I do always fill up on gas there, getting the discount by using the card. at $60/fillup i usually end up getting about 125 CO miles a month. As another poster mentioned, it would be nice to leave your card there as a community card for all patrons who didn't have their card to use, so they get the discount and you get the points.

My understanding leaving your card for others to use is a no no. The person manning the till could get in trouble for doing this. But more power to those that are able to do this.

I am getting AA miles from Randall's in Austin. I think it's a regional thing for different Airmile partners. IIRC, in Texas, you could link your Randall's card to either AA or CO.
On a site note, if you link your Safeway/Randall's cards during some promotional periods, you would get extra bonus like 2000 bonus miles. In the past, Randall's had run 2K bonus AA miles. Haven't seen similiar promo for quite a while though.

Do we have any grocery stores in GA that do this? I signed up on a vacation in CA several years ago, and use my Safeway card only about once or twice a year and it will take me 5-10 years to get 250 miles w/UA...lol
I live in Atlanta and it would be great to get some extra miles (Kroger rules here- same Company as Ralph's in CA). I could also use a store in Chattanooga, TN as I go there almost every week.
Anyone know a store in Atlanta or Chattanooga I can hook up with?
Thanks! :)

I earn 125 Alaska Airlines miles for every $250 spent at Safeway. Certain items are excluded from your eligible purchases like alcohol, cigarettes, and gasoline. I have probably earned the 125 mile award about 30 times since signing up.
Last year I won a big Weber gas grill by using my Safeway card when purchasing some meat. Apparently, I was automatically entered just by using my card during the contest period and I won the second place prize. The first place prize was a trip to Hawaii.

You get the airline miles when you have spent $250 - 125 miles. It accumulates each time you shop and on your checkout slip it will tell you how much you have spent towards your mileage/.

Right now Safeway and UAL are in the middle of a promotion - 1500 bonus miles for spending $1500 from May 1 - June 15, see:
http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,52189,00.html?jumpLink=%2F1500miles
Spending $1500 for groceries in six weeks is not something I aspire to, although maybe if they included gas in the total...........

I´m always open for more miles but I consider it quiet a bad deal to get 250 miles for 250$ spent (minimum). At least not enough to leave the supermarket around the corner...
Even for the current dining promotion "dine for 15$" you get 250 miles

I don't go out of my way to shop at Dominicks just because of the miles. I shop at Jewel more often. But it is nice to have 125 miles show up every so often. Also, they have had a few good promos. It does keep my UAL miles alive. They have had some promos for filling RX from time to time.

May 27, 07, 10:53 am
The same here. While I get the same 1 mile/$2 at Shop Rite, although the nearest one is 40 miles away, it is nice to get 10 miles or so for buying the coffee beans that I only find at Shop Rite. Plus, I do other shopping while I'm there. (It doesn't hurt that some prices are cheaper! :D)
So I only go there every 2 weeks or so, but those 50 extra miles are nice! ^ (I wouldn't get those bonus miles at the store down the road. :()
Plus, as stated, it keeps my CO account active. ;)

I noticed that I never get any safeway points when I buy giftcards there. What's the deal? Don't they make money from us from giftcards?
dgordon
May 28, 07, 10:21 am
I think that would be a little like double dipping, as you get points when you make your purchase by swiping you number. They have to be consistent with ALL gift cards, as each place might have their frequent buyer program. It makes sense that you reap whatever rewards you are going to get when you use the gift card wherever. That's my take on it.
the_traveler
May 28, 07, 8:59 pm
I agree. Shop Rite has the same offer - and one of the few exclusions is "gift cards".
Oh, I suppose they could say something like "You have the choice of getting the miles for the purchase of the card but you won't get miles when YOU use the gift card". But when you don't get the credit for using it, I bet you'll complain, or if you don't use it, but your wife does, you (or she) will be the first in line. Or if you buy a gift card at Shop Rite for Sears or Best Buy, I'll bet you'll complain to Sears or Best Buy if they don't give you credit too!
The same reason that Hilton Honors calls their offer "Double Dipping" - since you can earn both HHonors Points and airline miles. Most hotels say you can earn hotel points or airline miles.

A real mileage junkie will go 1 more block to safeway because it costs nothing more to get the same number of UA miles. It would be a bad deal if I did not have to get groceries or it really costs more to go to Safeway. And I think its500 miles per 250 (250 for program + 250 for UA CC).

Grocery Guru's please help me out!
I am in the DFW area and I am pretty sure there is no grocery store I can earn miles from, except Tom Dumb(Thumb) and it is horrible, at least when I checked last and their prices are so inflated!
I am on vacation now and I can get a Safeway card, but would it work locally to earn miles? I know I can use a Tom Thumb card at safeway and I would be it works the opposite way also......
Anyone know? Or have suggestions for the DFW area?
UA is my 1st choice, but AA and CO are fine also!

I have the Safeway discount card linked to my MP account but never carry it as I live in the NE and only shop Safeway time to time visiting the West Coast.
They conveniently look up your card number by phone number (so update it if you are always moving or changing cell #s) which is SO much more convenient than making a trip to the courtesy counter to have the instore discount number looked up like at ShopRite. It is great to not HAVE to carry the Safeway discount card for the few times I use it each year.
BTW ShopRite's Can-Can sale is on this week with Coke 12 packs 5 for $11, limit one offer, making you 5 1/2 OnePass miles closer to a BusinessFirst redemption to a host of longhaul destinations. (I'll start praying there will be inventory available when the miles post after I finish the Coke.)

The greenpoints (http://www.greenpoints.com/partner/prt_grocery.asp)grocery program has stores in several areas, but does not seem to have anything in Georgia or TN.
Due to a recent devaluation, it is not quite as good as Safeway: 0.42 miles per dollar. You get 10 points per dollar (excluding alcohol, terbaccy and gift cards), with frequent double and triple point opportunities. Then you convert them to miles at 500 miles for 11,900 points. Delta, AA and Alaska miles are available.

I love shopping at Tom Thumb in North Texas (the local Safeway brand) and get AA miles 1:1. It doesn't matter which credit card I use. Due to feeding Roger, I average 750 AA miles per month from TT plus what I get from my credit card.
