Mrs Henry's carry-on bag is showing its age and I've been thinking of surprising her with a nice leather Tumi 22" rollaboard but I'm puzzled by some of the numbers I'm seeing.

SAS say that the size limit is 23 x 40 x 55 (but with a total of only 115). Are they serious about this? The Tumi is 25,5 x 35,5 x 56 (117). Would they really send her back to the checkin desk if it didn't fit in the template-box at security? Or make her gate-check it when boarding?

I'm wondering why a major manufacturer would make such high-quality (expensive) luggage that appears to miss the permissable limits by only a cm here and a couple of cm there??? That is -- if it really matters?

cheers,

Henry

I doubt that they could see the difference, neither have I seen anyone from SK measuring any carry-on (except from a quick 1 sec. look)

Don't worry about it, all 22"s are approved. I have used a Tumi Ballistic on plenty of SAS flights.

This size might be a problem for departures from the UK.

No, 22" is fine even in the UKIf the measures given by the manufacturer include handles and wheels.

Real 22" from quality brands like Tumi and Travelpro has integrated handles and wheels and are of course within these limits.

I doubt they are if you don’t count on the manufacturer’s specifications but actually measure it.

I ran into trouble a couple of times with my Hartmann 22” a couple of years ago (was forced to check it), so now I use a 18” Travelpro that is well within the limits.

The UK rules for carry on sizes does not differ from the airlines measurement rules, the difference between the UK and all other countries is that the authorities enforce this at security check points which is not done anywhere else (unless the bag is enormous). I have not tried my Tumi bag at LHR after the new rules went in to effect, but my 22" Travel Pro fits like a glove in the thing still..

I don't understand why the Tumi wouldn't fit, it must be millimeters stopping it because the two bags have the exact same measurements and when I put them next to eachother, they look exactly the same size. The Travel Pro I use is a Crew 6 22"

Remember, there are quite a few Tumi 22"s, so some might still fit.

http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=7768157#post7768157Thanks very much. This is the kind of thing I was afraid of.

We don't like to transit LHR but I don't want to buy a bag that makes it impossible (or a major pain in the arse) should we ever need to do so in future.

cheers,

Henry

One would think... But not so. My 22 tumi does not fit, even when essentially empty, in LHR sizers....

Agree, its insane. Forced to rebuy a B&R 21, and will see if it works next week...

Weak.....

I doubt Tumi did this on purpose. I got my 22" before the UK fiasco, so I'm sure the next years model will have made the proper adjustments.

I guess Tumi is not made for the UK

Well the tumi 22 has worked in LON for years - even after the one bag rule came to fruition. Something changed just in the last 3 weeks or so.

Tumi will still work, but it has to be the 20"....

The size limits are non-standardized. For SK the limit is usually 23x40x55 cm. On KL it's typically 25x35x55 cm. On LH it's 20x40x55.

The Britons enforce a 25x45x56 cm, one item limit for all UK flights. I'm told there are upcoming EU regulations that will standardize this across EU, but I'm not sure about the date for that.
