AZ is Alitalia, NZ is Air NZ ;)

From the schedules (eg airnz.co.nz) you can see MEL-AKL arrives at 1725 and AKL-SFO departs at 1910, thus 1:45 transit.

AFAIK all pax must deplane at AKL.

Gotta Requalify

Even though it is the same flight number, it is treated like any International to International stop over. Which means going through Transit security (loosing any liquids) and going up to the departure level. So don’t buy any duty free in Melbourne.

It has been a while since I went from Mel to US via Auckland. Now they have the separate departure level, is there still secondary security for US bound flights? Can you buy duty free in Auckland for US flights?

No secondary security any more ^

Yes can buy duty free in AKL for US bound flights, but only if not connecting on another flight (or willing & able to place in checked bags on arrival).
