I may have to spend ~5 hours at EIS, waiting for my flight. I will be deposited there around 1 pm. My flight is after 6. I will of course stand by for earlier flights to SJU. But can a human being survive 5 hours at EIS?

Thanks.

Short answer is No.

Glad I am not you. There is absolutely nothing to do at the airport or in the immediate area i.e. walking distance from the Airport.

There are a few duty free liquor stores and one restaurant. If you do plan to wait on stand by I wish you luck, but if the worst happens and you don't get on till 6 pm, you better walk with loads of magazines and mp3 player portable DVD or some other form of long life entertainment.

If there is no rush to get to your final destination I would forget about the stand by and take a taxi tour of the island. 5 hours is more than enough time to see Tortola.

slight correction to the above post...

There is a beach provisioning and bar area very near the airport... Trellis Bay.
Walk out of the terminal, make an immediate left, and walk down the road (along the runway) about 3 minutes. If I had to spend a coupe hours near EIS, this is where I would head to have a beer or cool drink for a while. You can see the planes landing here, so go for part of the time and check on your standby status when you see the A. Eagle flight arrive. Five hours is a bit long, but there are plenty more uncomfortable Carib airports than EIS to spend time.

You could go around the island and find a nice meal somewhere, or head to the to the top of Tortola in a cab - if there was no chance of getting on earlier flight or you just feel like exploring a little. Beware, cabs are a bit $$$ in Tortola.
