The nights are weekend nights and not everyone wants weekend nights. I, on the other hand, would jump at 3 weekend nights over 18K points most anytime. Keep in mind, this time around the free weekend nights are good at CAt 1-5 properties!!!!! That was a nice surprise!

I also got this choice......and chose the points without giving it too much thought.
Sure.....after evaluating the offers, the free nights are probably a better deal......and now that I think about it, I probably could have made use of them before the end of the year.
Oh well.......
One thing I couldn't tell from the T&Cs.....is it the arrival date that counts?
i.e. stays with either a May 31st arrival or June 1st checkout won't count.....but one with an August 31st arrival does even if the checkout date is in September?
Or does the entire stay have to take place within the promo period?
i.e. earliest checkin being June 1st......last day to checkout being August 31st.
Inquiring minds want to know..... ;)

Good deal, and I will likely choose the free weekend nights. My only complaint is that I am tired of the incentives to switch hotels each night to build stays. I have had 19 one-night stands this year:), most of them in the past month or so. I figured I'd settle in for longer stays once I hit Plat, but now I get the incentive to keep on moving.

4 stays = 4k -> 1k per stay
8 stays = 12k -> 1.5k per stay
12 stays = 20k -> 1.67k per stay
Still.....when compared to the 3/6/9 stay promo......it's a bit 'off'.
While the 3 and 6 stay portions return the same ratio of points per stay (1000 and 1500 respectively........the 9 stay max returns 18K Starpoints....or 2K per stay.
If the point per stay ratios were equal among all offers, then the 12 stays should earn 24K Starpoints.
And when you compare both offers side by side using 9 stays (3 per month over the 3-month promo period):
9 stays on the 4/8/12 promo = 12K Starpoints
9 stays on the 3/6/9 promo = 18K Starpoints
An extra 6K Starpoints for those on the 3/6/9 promo......
FWIW, last year I was given the 3/6/9 promo for 18K Starpoints......and maxed it out. ;)
I was only a SPG Gold level member at the time.....
Which makes me wonder....
1a. Have any SPG Plats received the 3/6/9 stays for 18K promo?
1b. Or were all Plats offered the 4/8/12 stay promo and/or a choice of that or free weekend nights?
2a. Have any SPG Golds received the 4/8/12 stays for 20K promo?
2b Were any Golds offered a choice of promos?

It is frustrating to realize that offers differs so widely. I already requalified for my PLT status for 2008 and got the lowest promotion (9k). I wish I could have the free nights or a more valuable promotion... Would really like to see how they target everybody. Is it more nights and stays, less promotions?
Again I learned about these promos on FT, did not receive any notification from SPG about that.

Not if it's based on stays. The arrival date is what counts when a promotion is based on stays, not the nights within the stay itself.

Good news William but if it happens that would be a first for me anyway .... :D For the last 2 years always got that info on FT and never received any direct notification of promos... and yes my profile is showing that I want to get notifications from SPG.
This is not a big issue for me, just annoying, lucky enough to know FT!
So... waiting for that E-mail!!

I checked and had the choice of stay 4/8/12 and receive 1/2/3/ free weekend nights or 4/12/20K bonus points. I chose the nights as it's unlikely I will have more than 4 stays in that period and 1 night is worth up to 10K points. I won't have any problem using it before the end of the year. Thanks OP and SPG! ^

The offer as a Plat that I got was:
Earn 3,000 bonus Starpoints after every three (3) eligible stays up to a maximum of 9,000 bonus Starpoints. Stays must be at participating properties between June 1 and August 31, 2007.
Not being a moron I am, of course, taking it.
While I'd rather have 20k points, this is a pretty good deal. if you spend an average of $200 for a night in a Sheraton, that's worth 600 points per night or 1800 points for 3 nights (if you're gold or have SPG Amex). Adding 3 K points makes it 4800 points for 3 nights - or 8 points per dollar spent. Given the lower point requirements for award stays than other hotels, that's pretty attractive.
It's getting to be almost routine.

Same here. . . but I'm not a moron; this convinced me to book my fall business trips at other properties rather than *wood. Not sure when the marketing group will realize that loyalty really does need to be a two way street.
Sorry, but I fail to see why 3,000 points for every 3 stays is such a bad deal. If you stay single nights at an average of $200 per night, that gives you 8 points per night. Given that SPG requires a lot fewer points than Marriott, HHonors, or IC, and that award availability is much better on SPG, why is this such an offensive offer that you'd switch to someone else?
And who's going to offer you a better deal?
Some people are never happy.

Poor Starwood! :) You guys can't win - since people are checking all these old/regular links all the time!

I am already qualified for next year, so they had to offer me some real goodies and it turned out to be 4/8/12 or three free nights. Preferred the points to three free weekend nights. Points are a much more flexible currency.
Anyhow: At least until July 31 all my more expensive stays will go to Hilton for the triple-points-promotion, the cheap ones to Starwood for the 4/8/12-promotion. August will be a pure Starwood month again.
Oh boy, it s hard work to maximise your benefits. :D

Not sure I understand your point. Why wouldn't you simply sign up for the promo on the off chance (based on your post) that you MIGHT stay at a Starwood property, despite your distate for the marketing department, and get some additional bonus points?
In my case, with my frequent travel to cities where Starwood properties are the best bet anyway, this is icing on the Plat upgrade cake.

Let me assure you that no one at Starwood has the time to go looking for obscure ways to identify which members are FT'ers. If we really wanted to do that, we would just run a report on who participated in the last two Flyertalk "Thank You" promotions. ;)
But to answer the question, my suspicion is that he bookmarked this url:

At the risk of sounding like a broken record here I go again:
Once again a *wood promo based on stays, NOT nights! Once again in my case it will cost *wood money as I am currently on a long term *wood stay that was originally planned to encompass every single night of the promo period, now in order to maximize the promo I'll have to check out of *wood and in to a competitor's hotel at least 11 times, this promo will cost *wood 11 nights that I would have otherwise stayed with them.
In the past 13 months I've spent over 250 nights at *wood properties, during this time *wood has had several promos but - at least to the best of my recollection - ALL but one (the recent 4pts Stay4 Get4K promo) have been based on stays rather than nights.

Oddest thing I find about *wood targeted promos, is that sometimes even when one doesn't receive original *wood emails can signup OK for the promo.
I can appreciate (!?) if I'm not targeted for one thing or another; but find it annoying and disturbing that there *might* be promos out there I'd never know of (and *wood might lose that sale to me{!}, as it does affect stay decisions).
So - thanks again to FT...!

I think you've misinterpreted the real issue here. Starwood's e-mail distribution system seems to accomplish a fairly inefficient job over these past months and years. I think I can count on one hand the promotional e-mails I've ever received from *wood. Yes, they have my corporate e-mail address and that address has NO filters on it whatsoever. The issue is not on my end, it's on the sender's end of the equation.
Regardless, I suspect that one of the key reasons spg.com/promos was set up was to accomplish some means for folks to simply check in once a quarter and sign up for the new quarterly promotion. Not everyone gets the same offer, and I see that as completely reasonable and fair. Sometimes I get a great offer that I like, other times, I get a lousy offer that doesn't incent me at all.
In sum, I would suggest that everyone bookmark the webpage and check back during the last weeks of any given quarter and see what's new.

Or, perhaps you're saving your Starpoints® to discover the other half of the world. Stay three times and earn 3,000 bonus Starpoints, stay six times and earn 9,000 bonus Starpoints or stay nine times and earn 18,000 bonus Starpoints.
Terms and Conditions:
Offer is non-transferable and void for Starwood employees. Register online at SPG.com/promo by July 15, 2007. Member can earn one Free Weekend Night award for every three (3) eligible stays up to a maximum of three (3) awards OR a total of 18,000 bonus Starpoints may be earned: three eligible stays — 3,000 bonus Starpoints; six eligible stays — 9,000 total bonus Starpoints; nine eligible stays — 18,000 total bonus Starpoints. Once selected, the offer cannot be changed. Stays must be at participating properties between June 1 and August 31, 2007. For members who choose Free Weekend Night awards, the earned awards will be available within 72 hours after the qualifying stay posts, are not transferable and may be used at Category 1–5 properties on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night between date earned and December 30, 2007, for one single or double occupancy standard room only, including the cost of the hotel room and room tax. For members who choose bonus Starpoints, bonus Starpoints earned will post to the member's account within 2–3 weeks after the qualifying stay posts. This offer cannot be combined with other offers. It's really strange that *wood sends out different offers to the Plats when it's an earnings campaign like this... Why should some of us get better opportunities than others??
Not a good idea IMO, and it shows all over this thread
Because the marketing folks are so wrapped up in devising formulas for targeting the promos that they forget we share our info and other web blogs do the same.
Starwood is savvy enough to put Lurker here, but at the same time they don't realize how badly threads like (comparing each others targeted promos) this make them look... You'd think they'd learn from the mixed Freddie showing. @:-)
Instead of encouraging loyalty, Starwood is again insulting us by saying that some customers will be treated differently. They don't even spell out the criteria for us to change our "behavior" so we could get targeted for the promos better promos. :td:

By no stretch of anyone's imagination is the FlyerTalk membership any significant proportion of any frequent traveler's program membership. We're the freaks -- the ones who want to get the absolute most out of the programs and are willing to spend hours culling through messages and sites to find out how.
Starwood may be insulting you, if you take it that way. But it is hardly insulting the great majority of its membership who is happy to get any promotion to increase their Starpoints balance. It is, after all, a promotion, not an entitlement.
I suspect that if anyone wants to be targeted for more lucrative Starwood promotions, they should (and I'm guessing here), be borderline Gold or borderline Platinum in activity so Starwood has a better chance of creating a promotion to encourage GREATER loyalty, rather than simply rewarding EXISTING loyalty. The rewards for existing loyalty are written into the base benefits of every frequent program's various elite levels. Anything else is indeed a bonus.
It's not unusual for businesses to treat different customers differently, depending on their business goals. YMMV.

As one of their best customers, offered the lowest reward. :-(
So are you saying you don't get Platinum concierge service, Platinum upgrades, Platinum amenity Starpoints for each stay, and late checkout?
This is a promotion, not the program. The loyalty program itself is the reward for a high level of loyalty. That was my point when I said that "rewards for existing loyalty are written into the base benefits of every frequent program's various elite levels."
I mean, I wouldn't mind getting the better promotion, either. I didn't qualify. But I expect that trying to explain this kind of marketing distinction isn't going to be well received among some on this forum, no matter who does it.

The nights are weekend nights and not everyone wants weekend nights. I, on the other hand, would jump at 3 weekend nights over 18K points most anytime. Keep in mind, this time around the free weekend nights are good at CAt 1-5 properties!!!!! That was a nice surprise!

Thanks for the heads-up!
It's interesting looking at it from the "other" side of the coin. I was Plat until this year (quit work last summer), and was happy to just let my various FF programmes gently fade to nothing (and spend the points in the meantime). When I was Plat, I was a quiet grumbler about not getting targeted for any good promotions.
Starwood have snared me though! First of all I got the double stays/points award for stays between (IIRC) Feb and May. Bang - suddenly I've got 13 stays & 36 nights. With this new promotion on top, it looks like the marginal extra nights that I'll need during the year to qualify for Plat will be worth it. So that's more money in Starwood's coffers that would probably have gone to other chains/boutique hotels.
So kudos to their marketing department IMHO. And when I do qualify for Plat again, I'll not grumble about not getting the promos; I'd forgotten just how large the gap in treatment is when staying as a Gold vs Plat.

I got it too. But I have 2 questions:
1) I registered for double points until May, so will this continue? I hope so as the above promotion doesn't start until June.
2) I am Gold but after next week I will be Platinum. So is the promotion better if you are Platinum before th estart of June? If so then can I unregister and re-register after next week? I could really do with the free weekend stays so if there is any way to get that then please let me know

As a first-year Platinum (from an HHonors Diamond status match), I got the 3/6/9 stays 3000/9000/18000 points promo. I consider that pretty generous and it's a good encourager for me to make all my next few month's stays Starwood instead of HHonors or other companies.
It was questionable whether I'd actually requalify as Platinum this year, rather than just requalify Gold (which I've already hit). But with this type of promo it gives me another reason.
Of course it would have been nice if Starwood had told me about this promo:rolleyes:

Troyintn, it's a close call! Remember that the Weekend Nights expire in a few months, while points don't. How likely RU 2 stay at a Cat. 5 on a weekend? Do U have any such hotels in mind?
Because 20K = half of a 5-night stay at a Cat. 4, any days of the week! Of course if U stay Wed.--Mon. at Cat 4, it would be a wash: 20K + 20K or 3 free weekend nights + 20K!

William,
My question doesn't seem to be answered in 8 pages of combined threads so here goes another variation on the same theme - maybe you can help if you have time ?
On 18 May, I got 2 seperate email based promo invites from Starwood :-
1. If you're looking for a reason to stay with us again soon, we suggest you think in threes. Simply register by 15 July, 2007, and earn triple Starpoints® on all your stays from 1 June until 31 August, 2007.
2. To show you it gets even better, we want to give you the choice of two offers good for stays from 1 June until 31 August, 2007, when you register by 15 July, 2007. (I ignored the free nights option btw) Stay four times and earn 4,000 bonus Starpoints, stay eight times and earn 12,000 bonus Starpoints or stay twelve times and earn 20,000 bonus Starpoints.
... do these offers conflict as both let me sign up without a problem (complete with confirmation emails), and if they do conlfict which offer would win out in precedence? It would be nice for the system to award me both as I seem to be a lucky guy in having 2 from 3 options to choose from this quarter. It looks like the 20k pts would be the best deal by some margin and I don't want to lose that promo.
Despite some of the comments in this thread, this is a totally awesome quarterly promo (the best I can remember actually), so please pass on my thanks to your marketing team. We <3 Starwood.

Of course if U stay Wed.--Mon. at Cat 4, it would be a wash: 20K + 20K or 3 free weekend nights + 20K!
thanks, I was thinking I had a year for the weekend. You are correct, the only place I would use a weekend soon is the hotel near my house to go swimming at, and I have a great corp rate their so it would be a waste.

I got it too. But I have 2 questions:
1) I registered for double points until May, so will this continue? I hope so as the above promotion doesn't start until June.
It seems like it should. There does not appear to be any conflict with the timing because one is ending and the other is starting.
2) I am Gold but after next week I will be Platinum. So is the promotion better if you are Platinum before th estart of June? If so then can I unregister and re-register after next week? I could really do with the free weekend stays so if there is any way to get that then please let me know
No, it would not be possible to unregister and re-register.
THanks
No problem.

My question doesn't seem to be answered in 8 pages of combined threads so here goes another variation on the same theme - maybe you can help if you have time ?
On 18 May, I got 2 seperate email based promo invites from Starwood :-

Yes, these would definitely conflict, but it sounds like to me that these offers are for different members. Could be that there are two accounts in your household using the same email address or it could be that you have a duplicate account floating around out there somewhere. A call to the Customer Contact Center might be able to sort it out. If not, contact me offline and when I get a moment I will look into it further.

I received triple points - no other options. I'm Gold via the Amex, very little qualifying stay activity annually.
However, for my next two Seattle trips, the Marriotts are all sold out so I'm at the W. In this case, the triple points promo probably is the best one for me.

Comp'd Gold from AA for a stay in hawaii in January. No activity since but have stays coming up later this year.
I got the 9k total offer.
But I believe I read it is only at participating hotels. Is this just hotels that participate in the starwood program or in this promotion? In particular I would use 2 of the stays at the 4p in Norwalk CT.

I'm planning on staying at the same hotels for this promo and I'm pretty sure it will work just fine.

What promotion? This thread seems to be speaking to multiple promotions.
Regardless, if it is based on stays, it's the arrival date that is important, so if you arrive before the promotion end date does, then you should be fine. If you arrive before the promotion begins, then you wouldn't.

Cat 5 makes the nights a much better deal - I'd pick that if (and only if) you have a Cat 5 picked out for a weekend stay. This promo from last summer was Cat 1-4.

Hi - thanks again. I didn't see a code in the terms and conditions. I'll have to look when I eventually return home to see if I have an original screen shot there. In the past I've tried to re-register when I needed a new copy of the T&C and it provides them saying you are already registered. I did it now and it has all the T&Cs ("Offer is non... every three (3). stays...) but no code in it.

Thanks. I see it now. For an email I was just expecting one that said something like congratulations for achieving platinum.... I usually receive these from some of the other hotel programs. No big deal. It would just be a nice touch.

My points just posted (I got the 2/6/12K points for 2/4/6 stays version). It was kind of a pain to switch hotels so often -- I really wish that *wood, along with all other chains, would give up on promotions that rely on stays rather than nights.

Yeah, with the additional costs they incur for people who "hotel hop" within SPG properties in a city to get more stays, you would think Starwood would want to encourage people to stay in the same room for multiple nights. If someone changes hotels in one city 3 nights in a row, that's a cost for three times as many check ins, check outs, folio print outs, etc, etc....

Perhaps they view each check-in as an independent choice of hotel brands? But I can't see why this would matter to them.

I signed up for SPG promotion for the same time period and you get 6000 points for every 4 stays. Other choices are double stays (if you stay 3 times, you get credit for 6 stays), or double star points. I am most appreciative to SPG that you can choice your own option. I am tempted to take Hilton up on their offer to give me 10,000 Hilton Honor points, but personally, I feel that I get better value for my points with SPG. I plan to remain loyal to Starwood. That's good thinking cuz 6k SPG points are worth about 25k HH points. Much more valuable IMHO. But I wouldn't run away from the 4 stays to Gold with HH too quickly. HH Gold is almost as good as HH Diamond (pretty much the same bennies except no Diamond force for sold out award rooms). But if you do the 4 stays, your HH Gold should be valid until April 2009. Not bad IMHO and its always good to have a second program to fall back on in case SPG stops offering so many promos. :D ^^^

Basically the free nights won't show up as certs or anything visible to you. You will have to call a CSR to book them before 12/31, though.

The promo you reference doesn't mail out certificates nor will you see it online in your SPG profile. You will have to call the SPG desk to verify how many free nights you have earned. The best time to do so is after Saturday morning of any week you had a stay post so the system can do the sweep to credit you properly. Keep in mind you have until Dec. 31 to redeem your free nights.

I just tried to redeem 2 rooms for tomorrow night in NYC using the Q3 promo.
I checked online and the Chelsea 4 pts. had traditional rooms available using only 12k points.
I called to redeem my free nights and the agent said I couldn't. I explained that they are available using only 12k points online, why aren't they available with the free night promo. She said she didn't know.
I called back a few minutes later and got a different agent. This time I pretended to book using points. Rooms were available. I then asked if I could use the Q3 promo. She said sure.
Just goes to show, yet again. If you don't like your answer the first time, call back.
Also, I think it's funny how the first agent didn't ask if I wanted to be sent to the automated "rate the agent" survey, while the 2nd agent did.

Does anyone have the T&C for the above promotion (I registered this promotion back in May 2007)? I have 8 stays so far during this period but I haven't received any free night certificates or email notification. I'm just wondering if the free nights will be posted only 4-6 weeks after the promotion.
I've started emailing the T+C's to myself as soon as I register for these promos, and save in a Travel folder in my email system. Then, never a question about T+Cs.
Anyway, just call SPG. They have your night credits on record. I was able to book my 2 free nightsa few days after I stayed my 8th night in August, so there was never a question about having earned them.

I have just achieved Platinum for the first time :)
I have 2 free weekend nights from the Q3 promo (stay 3 times get one weekend night free) and intend to use them in November. Should I expect Plat privileges such as welcome amenity, upgrade and club access for these nights or are they treated differently to points award stays? Any info will be appreciated.

Yes.....
AFAIK, you will be eligible for all of the usual PM benefits when using points for free nights.

PS: Your post reminded me that I will very likely have to chase after the Plat. amenity points for my recent Cash & Points award stay.
