Hello,

I will probably rent from Hertz this July – the choices for our road trip are :

One way rental ORD – AMA (1 week rental)
Hertz : Hyundai Sonata – Ford Fusion 457€
Ford Focus 471€
Toyota Corolla 482€

(National is quoting 479€ for a G6 and 503€ for a Impala)

My personal choice : Ford Fusion? Looks really good.
Why on earth Hertz is quoting the Fusion at a lower price than the Focus? What would you recommend? (G6 and Impala included)

Rental DFW-DFW (1 week)
Hertz : Toyota Camry 273€
Nissan Xterra 361€
Thrifty : Dodge Charger 346€
Alamo/National/Avis : G6, Impala, Gran Prix, Montecarlo (280€-354€)
Camry looks comfortable…

We are going to put a lot of miles on those cars, so comfort is an issue.
On a side note : I found out that coupons do not really work if you are a non-US resident. They quote you a lower price but then you need to buy full CDW-SLI and the price doubles. Rates for non-US residents do include full coverage and are a lot lower. No upgrade coupons for me then…

Thank you for any suggestion !!!

if more than 2 people are going on this road trip I would not reccomend a g6 or those small cars. The interior is kinda cramped for a raod trip.

I would go for a full size car.

The SUV may give you an expensive gas bill.

First, those rates sound very high, but with the first one being a one way and as you noted, they include full coverage package. However, do you need that? Will your credit card offer some coverage and you could decline the Hertz-99%-profit insurance?

Secondly, a tip for your coupon rates. You might try to ask, especially with a dollar amount off coupon and see if they will give you that discount at checkin or at the return. It never hurts to try, and I'd guess that you would face some success with that option.

The choice is pretty easy for me -

The Hyundai Sonata for the one-way rental and the Toyota Camry for the 1 week DFW rental.

Please note that you aren't guaranteed your choice of car, and may end up with something else, but if you did get those cars they would be easiest on your has bill and IMHO most comfortable.

He says that he is not a resident of the US and thats why the high rates. they automatically include the insurance .

Exactly. As non-US resident I am forced to get full coverage, that's because of a coupleof reasons: most credit cards (here in Italy...also Europe) do not offer all those advantages you are used to (complimentary insurance on car rentals) ... personal car insurances do not cover that also. I have an Europe Assistance insurance but that covers only personal health issues. When I select "Italy" (or Uk, Ireland, France, etc etc) all rentals companies will quote me prices with full CDW and SLI. If I select "Italy" and enter a coupon code I get US conditions but I am then forced to select additional coverage. I can't risk to spend thousands of dollars for a car accident.
I'll try to redeem coupons at check in...I hope to get well treated as we are spending 1000+ $ on a two week rental ;) one way fees range from 199 to 300$.
The number of people are 2, my GF and I, so there's no need of huge cars, my selection was money and comfort oriented.

What??? You must have some credit card or policy that will cover your US car rental. I used to have to do this all of the time. Even if those prices were quoted in Dollars that quote would be too high. And for Euros it is outrageous. Can't you purchas AAA membership for a month or so and be covered? If I were you I would do some research here. AAA may have changed their laws, but they used to have policies for situations like this. I have not used them in years so I am really not sure. I'll try and look it up for you.

Back to the car selection issue,

I would pay the extra and get a fullsize (Chevrolet Impala) from National for the ORD-AMA 1 way. For the DFW roundtrip, take the Camry....

Even with only 2 people and the cost of gas you would still go with the Impala? To each his or her own...

Hell, I'd go with Hertz just because the fleet is wider and the choice of a decent upgrade is better. With National when you rent an Impala, your upgrade choices are only so good...

Yea, I just like being able to sprawl out on road trips without being on top of each other, and generally I prefer a little bigger then normal car (Impala, Accord, 300)

The Fusion and Sonata (especially) are fairly large inside. You are probably familiar with the Focus and Corolla, but be aware that the US versions are usually sedans instead of the hatchbacks you may see more often, and the US Focus is like the earlier (pre-2005) version that you see in Europe.

Hertz used to have a predominantly Ford fleet (including Mercury, Mazda, Volvo, Lincoln, etc.; used to be owned by Ford), but seems to be diversifying. National has a predominantly GM fleet. Note, however, that the GM models in the US are quite different from the GM models found in Europe.

If fuel economy is a concern, check http://www.fueleconomy.gov (give miles per US gallon).

Dammit!
I just checked those rates again and both the Fusion and Camry are GONE!
Almost 2 months ahead?
